Paper suggestions?

Paper suggestions?

2007-09-04 by chriskjezp

I'm giddy with excitement as I await my 2400. I'd like to try out a
few new papers as well. With my 200 I've been proofing on EEM and
printing on PA205 almost exclusively. I have tried Epson VFA and Moab
Kayenta and liked them both too.

I'm interested in the F-type papers, and wonder which of the three
(FAP, SR & USG) would be best to start out with? I also wanted to try
Dourian Art after reading Clayton's "Paper Chase" article, but I've
since learned it's been discontinued. Is there another lower-cost
alternative to Photo Rag that produces similar results to Dourian?
And though I don't tend to like glossy prints, I've never seen one
done with a 2400 and I'm very curious :)... so if you could recommend
a good glossy paper to start with that would be great too.

Thanks for your help once again.

Chris

Sorry, one more question:

What is the best online source for Innova, Hahnemuhle and Premier Art
papers? I can't seem to find one store that carries all of them,
which would definitely reduce shipping costs.

Thanks,
Chris

In my experience Shades Of Paper is the best by far.

Jim is now an Epson dealer so you can buy all Hahnemuhle, Innova, and
Premier Art Hotpress under the name of Epson Ultrasmooth there.

Thanks for your recommendation, John. I checked out their website and
didn't see Premier Art listed anywhere. I did see the Epson area in
the nav bar, but nothing is listed there yet. Guess I'll give them a
call to see what's up.

You might also want to visit www.inkjetart.com. They are unique among
vendors in that they also do big business as a professional inkjet
photo lab...they know what they're talking about.

Kayenta is no longer available under that name, seems to have been
renamed Lasal after Moab's purchase (?) by Legion. Most Moab papers
are now Legion products, retaining Moab's Utah regional names. Lasal
is also a Utah-specific name.

Lasal is also distributed by Calumet, which will be reassuring for
many, as Calumet's been a professional resource for a wide range of
photographic equipment and supplies for far longer than any other
company, save perhaps B&H (though they're mostly amateur and don't
have multiple locations).

I just made a QTR profile for Moab Lasal. Graphs showing the tonal
distributions are at:

In general the Lasal's coating in slightly cooler, the maximum warmth in the
shades is slight more, and the dmax is better.

I think at the right price it'll do well - rather similar to Premier Art
Matte BW and Red River's Polar.

Thanks Paul.

How would you say the dmax compares with PremierArt Matte BW? I like that I should be able to buy the Lasal in A4 from Australia and it's slightly heavier.

Speaking of which, I can't imagine why American manufacturers have not embraced the A4 size which is so much better for the 2:3 aspect ratio. It's frustrating for us in the rest of the world who are metric.

I suppose a lot of people are shooting in 3:4 aspect ratio though which is more suited to Letter size ...

thanks,
Richard

I knew there must be a good reason:)

Thanks for the Lab values - so it looks like PremierArt BW is still the cheap paper to beat, although the Lasal is better than the old Kayenta. Do you have a lab value for Entrada Bright? The Dmax of that was ok for my tastes (actually very good). I haven't got a QTR curve for that one.

I cut the PremierArt up from rolls, but it's time-consuming - so another good A4 Alpha Cellulose paper would be nice and I can get Moab papers in A4 from Australia.

Hi Richard,

In my same-day measure, after a hair drier, these are the numbers I got:

Premier Art Matte BW: L 15.4 or 15.0 (I have 2 recorded measures)

Moab Lasal: L 16.3

Note that there is a lot of dmax information in the linearization tabs of
the QTR profiles. So, for dmax for the 1800 and Eboni, just start pulling
up my QTR profiles with the Curve Creator and look at the last number in the
linearization tab. That gives you the Lab L reading for the 100% patch of
each paper profiled.

That's why we do it. ;)

Richard,

>Do you have a lab value for Entrada Bright?

My QTR linearization tab for the R260 indicates an Entrada BW 190 dmax of L
16.9. A rip, of course, might do a better job of getting the ink load right
than the Epson driver.
