Need Info to produce BO (Black Only) prints.

Need Info to produce BO (Black Only) prints.

2007-09-18 by Vinyl Graphics of Taft

I have been reading documentation from Paul Roark site about BO
printing. According to what I thought I read, I could do this using
my Epson R1800 using just one black cart with Eboni inks. When I went
to the MIS site, it got very confusing, so I used their little
Customer helper module to ask then exactly what I needed. I got a
reply back from some guy who said I should research the site for my
answer. What? So I emailed them again, and got a response back today
saying I can't do a BW print using existing carts. I had to buy three
carts from them, containing various black inks, but I couldn't do it
with just one cart.

Is this true? I can't exchange my OEM black with Eboni ink? As you
can tell, I'm quite the newbie and am a little timid about jumping in
deep waters.

You will need three new cartridges if you are using Epson inks now. You need
to fill the same matte (Eboni) black in all three and plug them into the two
black positions and the gloss optimiser. This means that you from then on
only will be able to print on matte papers (BW and colour), unless you swap
the matte black in PK position with the normal PK black used for glossy
prints. If you do this you can print colour on glossy media, but you must
make sure that you turn off the gloss optimiser option (unless you swap that
one back also). It is no problem swapping the matte and PK blacks you
dont need a cleaning cartridge. For changing back the gloss optimiser you
probably will need this I havent tried.

best regards,

Peter

Well, I'm pretty new at this too, but I disagree with that MIS person.
You only need to replace the OEM cart with an Eboni cart. See my post
from a few days ago, 'Great results with BO printing' for details. And
Clayton may jump in here, too, and suggest some information on his
website. (I'm assuming the R1800 has the BO option in its control
software. My R220 does, and it's a lesser printer than yours.)

The color carts need to be there, or the printer won't print. They are
idle however, only used in the cleaning cycle when you power up.

The R1800 100% carbon printing described at
http://www.paulroark.com/BW-Info/R1800.htm uses 3 carts. I try to
distinguish it from the Black Only in part to try and not have it be
confused with the workflows that use just the single black ink.

I'll let MIS management know they may have an employee who is a bit behind
the curve.
