7500 & Eboni-5

7500 & Eboni-5

2007-10-31 by Paul Roark

I've been comparing different papers and profiles for the Eboni-5 inkset in
my old 7500. So far, Hawk Mountain Condor BW is winning for most shots.
With the standard QTR profile (made the easy way with QTR's semi-automatic
profiling) the approach is printing quite smoothly and neutral (Lab B range
from -2 at highlights to max +2 in light midtones). Frankly, I'm very
pleased. I've been using my recent Grand Canyon shot that is now on my home
page as a test image because is has a plain smooth sky with a full range of
densities. If the system had excess dots or roughness, this shot (medium
format Tech Pan original, with virtually no grain) would show it badly.
Happily, the shot even looks good at 8 x 10.

For the warm, southwestern types of shots with no plain sky, Permajet and
MIS Alpha are on top of my paper list.

So far so good.

Hi Paul,

can you tell us which is this new base being able to keep diluted
Eboni in suspension without precipitating by gravity? As you know, I
have experimented for some time and never succeeded in making a stable
diluted Eboni. On the other side, diluted Mis PK appears stable.

Thank. Cheers,
  Daniela

I've updated http://www.paulroark.com/BW-Info/Eboni-5.pdf with a graph of
the current neutral-cool end of the Eboni-5 range.

Premier Art Smooth BW prints, using a standard QTR-partitioned profile, with
a Lab A = 1. That's a neutral, smooth, easy to profile 100% carbon print,
and the cotton paper is very affordable. It's a 200 gsm paper that is very
smooth. The CondorBW, at 300 gsm and with a texture option, and this
Premier Art paper give me such good neutral options that I'm abandoning my
early more neutral (but less smooth) profile option.

I just made my first 16 x 20, warm (Alpha paper) version of the Granary,
Tumacacori Mission, AZ (a donation to a Santa Barbara UU auction this
weekend).

So far, so very good.

Hi Daniela,

What I currently have in the 7500 is a pre-UltraChrome matte base. It
appears to no longer be available. However, there are newer bases, one of
which is recommended by MIS for Eboni dilution and one is probably similar
to the base I currently am using. I hope to have samples of several new
options to test soon. So, while we've had problems with some of the bases
we've tried in the past, I think there is a high likelihood MIS will be able
to find an appropriate base. (The sources want to make sales, after all.)

Paul, does this indicate that we might be able to get good results
with this approach on a 2100?

RE: [Digital BW] Re: 7500 & Eboni-5

2007-10-31 by Paul Roark

I made the 5 densities of Eboni the same as the industry (LK & LLK) and MIS
UT (C & LC) carbon/gray shades so the inks could plug into all the usual
Epson models. I think there is a good chance this works on all Epsons. If
Epson wipes out our empty cart supplies, re-filling carts (3800 up) and CFSs
(perhaps made with Epson dampers as the connectors) should allow pure carbon
printing for the long haul.

I'd guess the R2 Epson driver type workflow is also in the cards.

But I'm getting a bit ahead of the testing here.
