Epson/Cone .... Now What?

Epson/Cone .... Now What?

2007-11-03 by flyflightdeck

Well less than a year ago I bought a new Epson 4800 over the 3800 and
Canon IPF5000 for its ability to use Piezography inks.I still have not
got around to ordering a set of Cone inks yet.So with this whole law
suit deal I'm wondering what move to make next. The 4800 empty cart set
at Inkjet mall is 390.00.I can't afford the carts and the bottles of
ink all at once right now.So do I buy the cart set now hoping they
will last the life of the printer, and get the bottles of inks later?I
certainly can't afford two sets of empty carts right now. Also will
Cone continue to manufacture the inks after the last carts are gone?I
don't want to invest all this money if these carts only last for
several fillings and Cone stops making the inks because of the
situation.I guess this is aimed mostly at Jon Cone, but if anyone else
has any ideas I'm game.Like everyone else I'm bummed at the
situation.I've used Piezography as well as MIS in the past and really
hate to see it go.

$340 at MIS. Probably cheaper on ebay. I'd get the carts NOW. I think the ink will be around for awhile yet. I'm stocking up on extra cart sets for my printers as we speak.

Re: Epson/Cone .... Now What?

Chris,

I can tell you that the biggest silver lining in something like this
is that finally a very clear guidebook has been written by a judicial
body that spells out perfectly in plain-English what is infringing and
what is not. No one wants to infringe. And I believe everyone thinks
patents should be protected. A lot of the carts which were denied by
the judicial body were truly believed by their manufacturers to be
non-infringing. And several almost made it. Now its finally possible
to design products which are certainly non-infringing.

regards,

Jon

Re: Epson/Cone ....and an environmental slant

2007-11-03 by Frank Jay

Jon's point is a valid one. Our or Chinese engineers will figure out something or someone will reingeneer the piece that houses the ink and transports (no clue as to the name) the ink across the page. Someone will figure it out IF it is profitable, and it will be soon.

Another point, instead of letters to the president, congressmen and senators, like I sent, why not letters to environmental orgaizations stating that thisEpson back legislation is forcing people to throw away cartridges which take about a thousand years to fully break down. All companies hate bad press, and right now, the only people who banter this about are photographers. How about printers in Greepeaces office..might be Epsons...or World Wildlife Federation..might be Epsons...etc etc.Would they want to support a company who "helps DESTROY the environment" The "green" movement is alive and well and growing and I am sure their lobbyists know all the angles to present this with. I belong to the Sierra Club and Audobon Society, I will get a letter off this weekend. You never know what kind of legs it might get from an environmental POV>
  my two cents

So does that mean don't panick, that if all the currently available
empty carts get snatched up for the 4800 that there will be other
alternatives for using Cone inks in my 4800 down the road, and that
these inks will continue to thrive?

Re: Epson/Cone .... Now What?

2007-11-03 by Jon Cone

You are not affected by this.

3000, 4000, 4800, 7000, 7500, 7600, 7800, 9000, 9500, 9600, 9800,
10000 and 10600 which we supply product for are not affected in any
way by this ruling.

None of this affects any printers larger than 13". Any printer that
takes a cart of ink which does not snap directly on the print head is
exempt and that is considered a 17" and wider printer by EPSON.
