I find it convenient to store text pages from the occasional magazine article as a B&W jpg image. [Rather than storing a bulky stack of mags] Trouble is that uneven or dim "convenience" lighting or an unflat page near the centre staples often causes a grey gradient on part of the text. This spoils it for OCR or spoils the appearance when reading it later. Can Photoshop or similar do something that just leaves black print on a white page? ie remove the gradient?

The better trick to to put a black sheet behind the page before scanning, so that there is far less back-print bleedthough. If this is a black matte board, it will also help flatten the page at the binding, minimizing the gradient at the edge. Then, adjust the whitepoint on this better scan, to further improve legibility. I would say it depends on how black your gradient is or dark gray. Of course the closer to black the worse it will be. Instead of using a gradient you might try a layers adjustment where the blending option puts a limit of replacing with white where you OCR software can still function. It might even help to put a little blur on the layer so that it softens the edge effects.
