Reviving leaking MIS spongeless cartridges?

Reviving leaking MIS spongeless cartridges?

2007-12-02 by Roger

I use MIS Spongeless replacement cartridges for an Epson R220. As
others have reported, some of them leak out the bottom when refilling.
I am wondering if there are any ways to stop it from bleeding out or if
once they start to leak they are just junk?

I've been tossing them out, but given likely difficulty in procuring
more cartridges would like to hold on to as many as possible.

Also, unrelated question- Paul Roark's QTR ICC profiles are neatly
organized under a "Black and White" category. When I make them with
QTR they end up lumped with all my other profiles. Is there a way I
can get them listed under B&W, too?

Thanks,
Roger

Hello Roger, I have about 40 something MIS carts for my R220s. I've had three "leakers" and
tried a number of things before just pulling off the chips and tossing the carts. There seems
to be a failure rate that you just can't get around. As to stock, I just ordered 30 new
spongeless carts for an 1800 I have on order and there was no problem with the order, the
price has gone up a bit...(we do live in a capitalist society), but MIS said as long as they are
on the website they'll be selling them. My experience has been once you get past the leakers
and the bad chips, the ones that work are pretty solid.

When I re-filled my carts for the first time, I had a leaker. Not
knowing what to do, and anxious to get on with the printing, I coved
the port with my finger and got it back into the printer asap. Since
then, I've had the same cartridge in and out several times to be
refilled and it hasn't leaked at all. I imagine that the leaking is a
seating issue with the little ball and spring inside the cartridge.
Sometimes it seats properly, sometimes it doesn't. I haven't tried it
yet, but I wonder if flipping a leaking cartridge upside down and
gently poking the the ball with the needle end of the syringe might
help it find a better seat.

Both MIS and I have found that in some cases poking the poppet valve with a
bottom fill adapter does cause it to re-seat better and seal.

Given the possibility that these carts will become harder to find, I would
save all the old spongeless carts. They can be rinsed out and re-used even
with different inks. The small sponge they do have is in the air inlet
path. It gets soaked with whatever ink is in the cart, but most of that can
be pulled and rinsed out.
