Digital BW, The Print

For the sake of trying, I've tested HPR 308 with only MK,LK and LLK 
from the K3 set and QTR. I get a 1.55 Dmax at best, it seems low to me. 
Anyone with similar or different figures.

I get 1.65 to 1.66 with K3 on the 11880 (ABW) and 9600 (QTR and ABW).  
The 3800 isn't as good for some reason. I've also had Hahnemuhle batch  
issues which resulted in a drastic loss of dMax in the past though.

You can increase the black dmax very well with QTR but your paper may  
be sheening down in dMax (ie over-inking.) Epson ink is more prone to  
this than other inks because of the resin in it (I'm assuming. I could  
be wrong here.) See what you get with ABW and compare the results.

The old 9600 Epson drivers with a normal RGB profile Perceptual BPC  
decreases the dMax on HPR with MK ink down to about 1.56 I've noticed.  
Piezotone Museum K ink works better as it can build up to a much  
darker black on Rag papers. The more you add the more it is increased  
in dmax. Portfolio Black gives 1.76 dmax on HPR but would need to be  
sealed with Premier Art.

I've measured all percentages, all resolutions, all spectros and I just 
can't get anything better, so over-inking is not at stake. Surprisingly 
enough Dmax varies very little when the printer over-inks.

I may go the built-K route in StudioPrint, my Piezo system has let me 
down this week, this is the reason why I tried this, quite 
disappointing. 

Say I use max K and little CMY in Studioprint and max GCR in the 
profile, do you feel this is a proceeding to explore ?

I get 1,58 with Innova Smooth Cotton HW with 3800's K3, haven't tried
HPR yet... I've read that HPR can reproduce deeper black so I think
that it will be possible to have better results with it...

For reference, HPR 308 with the Epson 3800 and K3 should be able to
get a d-max of around 1.64 to 1.65. This is when printing with the ABW
driver, Media Type = Velvet Fine Art. I don't know how close you can
get using QTR and just the three blacks ... I would imagine pretty
close to 1.65.
