Epson 1160 and MIS/VM and microbanding

Epson 1160 and MIS/VM and microbanding

2002-02-03 by donbga

Today I made my first prints using the MIS/VM inkset on an 1160 with
CFS carts. My only problem that I have observed is micro-banding that
is most prominent in the dark tone and low mid tone areas of the
print. I applied all of the curves created by Paul Roark and the
problem was evident in all four prints.

How should I try to adjust for the micro banding? This is my first
attempt at digital inkjet printing so I apologize for what is
probably a simple question. The paper is Epson matte heavy weight.

Thanks,

Don Bryant

Don,
Sounds like one of your inks is not making its way through all the
nozzles of the print head. Try printing the "purge" file from MIS,
without any color management and see if it is confined to one ink.
It may well be some air in the cartridge. I think that MIS suggests
three clean cycles on the printer and then printing the purge file
again. If it does not clear after a few pages them maybe you need to
prime you cartridge again. Don't give up, the 1160 is worth it.

Microbanding is capricious - it may mysteriously appear and just as
mysteriously go away. Still, in addition to what Nodbo has to say, the other
things to try are the head alignment utility and the paper thickness lever.
Since the paper thickness lever actually moves the heads closer and further
from the paper, if you were to try both it would make sense to first change
the paper thickness lever, THEN realign the heads for that lever position.

Hi Don:

Nodbo has some great advice. How's your humidity where you are printing?
People on this list and/or others recommend at least 30%. Also, I think that
unless you are using very heavy paper-like cardstock, the 0 setting is
best(check the lever on the right side under the cover). And of course, head
alignments with the same paper and checking them with a loupe is essential
(over a lightbox works well).

All the best!

Slide it to the rear before you clean the heads, do the nozzle checks or
do the printhead alignments. And be SURE you use the same thickness of
paper to print these on that you will be printing on for your final
prints. Every time you move the lever, you have to realign the heads.
