R220 and 308gsm

R220 and 308gsm

2007-12-30 by Drew Tait

Before buying some Hahnemuhle photo rag 308gsm I got a small sample to
see if it worked in the R230 (R220). Well the upshot is that it didn't
feed so I printed in the 188gsm sample instead.

Question: should the heavier Hahnemuhle 308 feed or is there something
wrong with my printer?

Hello Drew,

I was able to feed heavy papers in my R200 by putting a slight bend in
the paper so the leading edge is pointed more toward the grabber to
begin with. Then I also put my fingers on top of the paper and put a
bit of downward pressure on the top edge to ensure that the leading
edge moves into the path of the grabber. Note that you don't want to
push the paper in (that will cause it to pass through), but just
enough pressure to ensure the paper moves forward enough that the
grabber can get hold of it. It will then pull it in. Takes a bit of
practice to get just the right feel for it. It's very persnickity.

Regards,
Clayton

Hi Drew,

It seems that the R220 does not handle heavier paper very well. I even
have problem feeding Premium Matte 210gms paper on the outside bend.
Inside bend is ok, but once in a while, the printer refuse to engage it.

Not so with the R260 which will grab just about any paper weight to
300gms. Have not tried heavier paper with the R260.

R260 BO prints with QTR have finer grain especially in the sky area,
but the BO R220 print with the Epson driver seems to have a little
more punch.

Cheer,
Andre

Clayton/Andre/Kirk,

Thanks for the tips. I have been able to successfully print on the A6
test strip with your advice.

Also because I am only feeding one sheet at a time I angled the
pre-curved, leading edge of the paper to the front of the picker roller
thereby ensuring that it had the best chance of feeding the sheet -- I
used just enough pressure to initiate the feed. It was not forceful by
any means. I am now in Eboni, BO, Hahnemuhle Nirvana!

All that I have to do now is build my Photoshop skills, well GIMP
(Linux) actually, and take better care of my neg's to reduce the amount
of spotting I have to perform. But at least that is now per file not per
wet print!

I would also like to take this opportunity wish a very happy new year to
all. I have enjoyed the challenge of trying to absorb the wealth of
knowledge and experience offered here so freely by all. The help is most
appreciated and for that I am most grateful...

Hello,

I have printed on Crane Museo 250gr a bunch of times curving the paper and pushing gently the sheet to get engaged until the other day the printer refuse it.
And then it refuses any sheet of paper even an 80gr writing paper.
I am stucked here for the time being, if anybody has an idea it will be welcome.

Michel

If you go to the Epson USA site and troubleshoot your R220, you'll be
told that anything heavier than, say, Enhanced Matte exceeds the paper
weight specifications. But with that curl set into a single sheet as
described above, you'll be able to feed heavier weights. Mostly. Sorta.

Andre,

I've had a lot of trouble getting Moab Kayenta (205 gsm) to load in
my R220. Can you tell me what you mean by 'outside bend' and 'inside
bend'? Maybe that's my problem.

I've tried everything, using many tips from this group - slight curve
in the paper, cleaning the rollers with alcohol-moistened watercolor
paper, etc. The paper goes into the printer, so it does get picked
up... but then passes right through. And I was as gentle as I could
possibly be when I gave a 'nudge' along the top edge.

The strange thing is I can feed 8 1/2 x11 ok, but not 5 x 7 (both are
loaded in portrait orientation of course).

Thanks!

Paul
