quoting previous posts

2008-01-05 by ncmphoto

It seems many people on this list don't use the posting guidelines: i.e. to *only* quote the
relevant part of the post you are responding to, not all the previous posts in the same
thread. This is excruciating for those of us who subscribe to the digest view, as we have to
scroll through reams of quoted older posts - often the entire thread - to get to the next one.

Please try to follow normal list etiquette (and the guidelines for this group) and only quote
the few sentences in the last post you are replying to. My mouse finger is getting exhausted
from all this scrolling.

thanks,

ncm

I am just curious why would you choose this way instead of individual
e-mails? What are the pros and cons?

Yes, duly noted, and thanks (g).

I've always preferred digests for all my elists, mainly to not clutter up my mail app with
thousands of posts, as I subscribe to about 10 of them. I can save the digests, each in their
own mailbox, have them available locally for research, and they don't take up as much room.
The cons would be that one can be late in responding to a post as it might have come in
hours before, but except for that, I can't think of any other disadvantages.

cheers,

ncm

I just switched to digest because of the volume of emails and lately the reponses inside the body of the email was not matching the subject heading. The past few days I have been following threads I was initially interested in but the responses took such turns as..."good luck with that", "oops I made a mistake" or other responses that conveyed no real information. To open that email, read it only to find out that the thread eroded and gave me no information turned out to be a waste of time for me. That is fine for people to make comment, that is what these forums are for..communication...and good communication. But for me, it is about time and how I use it.

I use digest for almost all my other groups..this way I can open it, scan down the digest and pick and choose what I read, rather then read, deleted, read delete. etc.On one group sometimes there is nothing that interests me, so it saves the time of reading ten or more emails. When I want to save an email and keep it for reference, I just copy and paste it into a new email , rename it for my own use and keep it in a new folder.

It comes down to personal preferences.

Few trim just to make digest readable.

It really shouldn't matter how different people choose to read the
list. Trimming the irrelevant stuff is just good practice and helpful
to everyone.

The digest option is terrific since you get ONE email per day and all
the new posts are grouped by subject. It's very well put together and
makes a great deal of sense - once you try it. And you can always
switch back. The only problem is unclipped posts which can become so
long as to be quite annoying. Try the digest format, you won't go back.

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
