David Brooks' Article in Shutterbug

David Brooks' Article in Shutterbug

2008-01-05 by Kurt Kramer

In the February 2008 issue of Shutterbug, David Brooks writes an
article about printing in B&W with MIS Carbon inks and QTR in an Epson
R1800 or R800. Brooks' article was written with a great deal of info
from Paul Roark. Were the procedures in this article rendered moot by
the recent Epson court decision that was discussed so thoroughly here?

I hope not. There are still carts and CISs available. In the worst
case scenario that all 1800 compatible carts dissappear, there is
still, I believe, at least one CIS on the market that does not need the
carts.

I do not know what MIS's sales policies are going to be. But there is
no restriction on inks, and I'm confident there will continue to be
ways to get it into the printers.

I'm new to this. "Carts" are cartridges, right? Does CIS mean
continuous ink supply? With CIS, and in the absence of cartridges, do
the Epson patents not apply to prohibit whatever the connections are
between the ink supply tubes and the actual printing heads?

Yes.

Most of there CIS systems simply run a tube to an empty cart that has
been imported and arguably violates an Epson patent. A CIS, however,
can be made without such a cart. www.Inkrepublic.com appears to use
dampers instead of carts at the connection. I've though such a system
would be both superior and avoid the patents.

I've recently purchased 4 CIS units on eBay (China import) that have
inserts different enough from 'cartridges' per se, that they might
not be affected. They are reasonably well built and designed,
considering the very reasonable price. I've had the longest running
one in service for 3-4 months with no trouble. Boy do I love auto-
reset chips!

Can the tubes not be connected to an empty EPSON cartridge?
Apparently the CIS-makers manufacture their own carts?

I'm told by MIS that they have plenty of cartridges to respond to the
expected demand from the Shutterbug R1800 3-MK article.

As to the CISs, I'm hoping the Epson threat induces the designers to
come up with more non-cartridge based systems. I think currently most
buy imported third party carts and modify them by putting tubing
attachment devices on them. I'm not sure the U.S. has any domestic
third party cartridge production.
