Glass cleaner & print life

Glass cleaner & print life

2008-01-17 by Richard Smallfield

Hi,
I was framing some prints yesterday and the glass had been sitting around for a while and wasn't too clean - so I sprayed what in the USA is called Windex and over here is called Mr Muscle Glass Cleaner - which did the job.

But then I wondered, could any outgassing from this product affect print life once the print is framed?

thanks,
Richard

Yes it can. Many glass cleaners have ammonia in them and you should at
least wait before closing up valuable art in a frame with it.

Ammonia is a harmful chemical. Picture Framers never use any ammonia
based cleaners on glass or acrylic. Our favorite glass cleaner is
Sprayway glass cleaner. It comes out as foam and we have fewer issues
with streaking. It is available at Wal-Mart.
