Black and White Ink Jet noob question

Black and White Ink Jet noob question

2008-01-28 by douglastourtelot

I shoot both digital and film; DSLR, 35mm and MF. I have all
the "stuff" in place to print good quality B&W for the first time
since putting my wet darkroom away many, many years ago. Epson R800
with MIS Eboni inks, QuadRIP, great archive paper, etc, etc.

But the more I read, the more "confusered" I become; printer setups,
photoshop setups, RIP setups, paper ICC profiles, Macbeth B&W strips,
MIS forums, Epson forums. My head is spinning!!

Now I am certain that I am not the only "old-schooler" that is going
through this angst, but where do I begin to get a grip on this
workflow? Does anyone, Epson or some Wizzard, have a travelling
workshop that will make this clear enough that I can get started and
not have to flounder through it experimentally to the waste of
expensive paper, inks and good will? Is there a straight-ahead
tutorial site where the information is presented in a comprehensive
way and not all fragmented by manufacturer?

Any body got some pointers for me?

Thanks so much!

D.

Check out this excellent book:
"Mastering Digital Black and White - A Photographer's Guide to High
Quality Black-and-White Imaging and Printing"
by Amadou Diallo
ISBN-13: 978-1-59863-375-7

It covers all of your questions in a single book.

Hope this helps!

I was in a similar situation as yours and I must say that this book
really helped me a lot.

Still better to me is

George DeWolfe's Digital Photography Fine Print Workshop (Paperback)
072260874/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1201538630&sr=1-2> by George
DeWolfe
The Amadou Diallo is too vague in some concepts and it gets lost in some
general media descriptions that seems too elemental. However, it still
is a good reference book.

Hi Juan,

I think D. was looking for Black and White related information,
that's why I sugessted Amadou Diallo's book. Even though George
DeWolfe's book on printing is a good choice, there's very little in
it in respect to b&w.

You may be right, but even so, DeWolfe has everything you need to have
the right workflow, be it B&W or colour, that's my experience. You need
some Photoshop experience to be able of extracting the right
information on their content, though.
And I would reccomend reading the tips and articles of some members of
this group list, like Clayton Jones, at
http://www.cjcom.net/digiprnarts.htm (specially, articles #8 and #9
shows how good B&W printing doesn't need to be any complicated...) and
Paul Roark at http://paulroark.com/
Keep it simple and develop a consistent workflow.

Best,

Why not begin by asking the questions that have popped up at this point?

I have to second Juan's thoughts. I fell asleep reading Amadou's book.
I gave it away before finishing it.
