3MK Glossy R1800 Banding problem IlfordGFS

3MK Glossy R1800 Banding problem IlfordGFS

2008-03-16 by jvircoe

I am using a linearized version of Paul Roark's QTR profile C-3MK-
IlfordGoldFB-GL-1PK on A4 Ilfordgold Fibre Silk and MIS inks/glop. I
am using MP-PK in the PK position. All other inks as described in
Paul's published PDF workflow.

When printing I specify 2880 and Uni-directonal.

I am achieving a D-Max of 3.15 - fantastic result. Thanks Paul.
(this was measured with my Colorvision/Printfix Pro spectro on a
black and white test image available at www.northlight-
images.co.uk/digital_black_white.html).

My only problem in an otherwise perfect workflow is that I am
experiencing very subtle vertical banding (about 3mm in width
(alternating dark and light bands) on A4 paper) in the same direction
as the longest side of the paper. The banding is only visible in
constant mid-grey sky tones and while subtle is enough to put me off.

I have tried adding grain to the sky (using Grain Surgery) but this
has not made a difference.
I have checked my nozzle print pattern - no problems there.
Any other thoughts on what I can try?

Thanks
Jim

I found my 1800 rollers had become fouled with all the glop experiments.
It was resulting in vertical banding and could be what you're seeing. I
clean rollers by spraying Ace Janitor Strength Smmonia across the
central portion of an EEM sheet and running it through the printer. I
follow that with several sheets of plain paper. Then I repeat the
process. I found in the first cycle the papers came out with lots of
ink on them. The second cycle was clean. It seemed to work.

Hello Paul,

Do you find you have to be careful with that ammonia? I (stupidly)
took a whiff of it once and it really burned my throat... someone on a
forum somewhere suggested I not use it. But you apparently have found
a way to use it safely. I'm tempted to try that on my R220 rollers
which have trouble grabbing heavy stock.

I try not to breath it. With an open window and not breathing while
spraying the paper, I can manage it, however.

Ammonia is a old household item and many of us use it. Always read the label and warnings. Don't mix with bleech unless you know what you're doing, etc.. Maybe you are extra sensitive. I buy Clear, with blue (window) second choice. I also buy sudsy for general cleaning sometimes.

I don't really know about roller cleaning, but I do use my white vinegar when I don't need the strength of ammonia. You can dilute the ammonia with vinegar or water. I usually do vinegar with water and a splash of ammonia when cleaning ink.

Thanks, Gary, but I'm talking about _janitorial_ strength ammonia. Big
difference! And that's what Paul (the other one) was using.

Thanks for the vinegar tip... I've never tried that - will try that
next cleaning job I do, thanks.

Regards,

Paul
