Scanning Polaroids

Scanning Polaroids

2008-03-15 by markleewebb

Anyone shoot Polaroids with a 4x5 and then scan them??? Is the quality
high? Or, do you use the Polaroid film that also produces negatives,
and just scan the negatives? I was thinking about scanning the positive
print Polaroids because I've heard those Polaroid films that produce
the negatives create a kinda messy negative, and if I'm 4 miles out in
the desert hiking a trail, or in field for several days/ a week the
negatives could be a problem, so just using the positives and scanning
them later sounded like a viable option. I am just wondering if anyone
does this, and how much resolution you lose if you scan the positive
Polaroid prints?

I shoot 55 P/N and scan on my Epson V700 - works a treat. The quality id
very high and the negative is very fine grained. The film itself is supposed
to be Panataomic-X which was a wonderful high resolution film.

Your best bet is to expose the film, remove from he holder leaving the lever
in the load position and develop after you get back from your trip. Also you
can remove the film from the packet and develop just like regular sheet film

While the prints are OK scanning the negative is way, way better

Polaroid is Bye-Bye, but Field Photogs regularly process and odd stuff while out and about. Some use holding bags 'til they get home.

If you already have a back, I'd grab what you can and make the best of it. It's been suggested that the stuff won't sit for long periods in the freezer. I don't know that you loose resolution, they are both direct like positive and negative films.

good luck. I had hopes of getting some polaroid through my Pressman. Maybe Fuji or someone will give us something afforable.

Besides the fact the neg from Type 55 is Pan-X, what we be the
advantage of shooting it any longer unless you need the instant proof
and do not have a darkroom? Fuji Quickloads with Acros 100 makes a
great "no film holders to carry with you" alternative. The film is
very nice too, very fine grain. Scans great.

Thanks for the perspective, Mark.

For me, as a kid, Polaroid had a "look". Hard to shake that impression. I don't want instant film for instantness. I may have to content myself with the polluted, exhausted D-76 look : )

Re: [Digital BW] Scanning Polaroids

I agree about the Polaroid look. I love it. I have several Polaroid
films that I use with a Daylab for printing slides, as well as a few of
the SX-70 film. I am keeping all them refrigerated; and even though
they will lose something, I am going to keep using them until I no
longer get a print with them.

Hi Nancy, I never got to do AutoChrome, either. No, agfachrome. I keep missing the good stuff : ) On one camera, I'm getting a good look (highlight character) with TMax100. Other that that, my pics are rather unsatisfying.

Enjoy the film!!
