R1800 for Paul Roark

R1800 for Paul Roark

2008-04-24 by Nancy Wilson

First, thank you for responding to my query re. printing problems with
my R1800. I think I am getting close to resolving issues and awaiting
new inks to find out. I now have some questions regarding a previous
post where you are identifying inks you use as you are experimenting
with the new gloss papers.

> I have not had any clogging issues, but, nonetheless, I've set mine
> up now with Eboni in C, MK and PK, and cleaning fluid "insulatore"

> Because I do want to continue to experiment with the glossy papers
> and 100% carbon printing, I also have MIS Pro PK in the Y position
> and glop in the GO and Blue spots.

Another reader responded: "So lineup, from left to right is as
follows? ---

Normal: Y M C MK PK R B GO
You: Pk cln Eb Eb Eb cln GO GO"

Here is my question: As the cartridges EB for the PK, MK, and GO are
not interchangeable, how do you achieve printing capabilities with MIS
PK in the Y position, Eb in the C position and GO in the B position.
When I posed that question to Inksupply.com, they had no idea. I
assume you must be using a continuous feed system. Are those carts
still available?

Thank you in advance. Nancy

You can get empty MK carts on the MIS website and then buy replacement
R1800 chips on the MIS website as well. Just pry off the MK chips and
snap on the right color chip and you should be fine. The printer has
no idea what's actually in the cartridge- it just looks for the right
color chip. No CFS required.

Yes. Note that for the 3-MK matte printer profiles I start the names
with "C-3MK" so that I don't use the wrong profile. I just copy the
curves from the GO to the C Point Lists in QTR's Curve Creator. I
might post a Zip file with these in them if others do this and are not
comfortable transferring the curve points.

As Roger noted, I just pop the chip off the one cart and put it on the
other. I use a 1/8 by 1 inch strip of tape across the top of the chips
to hold them in place. Be sure never to install a cart without a chip.

Roger,

I'm puzzled... I thought, due to the Epson suit, that these carts were
no longer available. Have you been able to obtain some lately? Thanks!

I'm confused too, but yes, I bought a bunch of R1800 MK carts a few
weeks ago. They worked well whereas my crappy Ebay ones gave me
constant clogging.

-You are lucky your carts only caused clogging. My crappy ebay carts leaked from the
bottom seals constantly. What a mess. I am awaiting delivery on MIS carts I just ordered.

Thanks, Roger, that's encouraging. I see someone else in this thread
got some, too. I also find navigating that website confusing (guess
I'm easily confused <g>) but could you give me the catalog number of
those carts? I think I found them but want to be sure.

I am somewhat familiar with MIS, Eboni ink, and their spongeless
carts, so that helps. I've loaded those carts for my R220 to do
Clayton Jones' BO printing using Eboni ink in the black position and
MIS cleaning fluid in the color cart positions. This has worked
beautifully, even up to 5 x 7 and am very pleased with the results on
Moab Kayenta paper.

But took the plunge and got a refurbed R1800 with Paul's helpful
encouragement but haven't removed my OEM color carts yet. Want to try
his 3 MK approach so I can get up to 11 x 14, hopefully.

I've been reluctant to try eBay carts, and comments here have
confirmed my fears.

Filled carts here:
http://www.inksupply.com/R1800_bo.cfm

Empty cart found here:
http://www.inksupply.com/epson_cartridges.cfm
SLC-T0548-EC is R800 MK EMPTY CARTRIDGE W/CHIP

Note- these carts are the same as the ones you (and I) use in the R220
so if you have extra carts lying around you can fill them with Eboni,
pop on a R800/1800 chip and use them.

I've had a bit of trouble getting the MIS ones to fit properly in the
R1800, but with a bit of wiggling got it to close right.

I get some pretty ugly tonal transitions using BO in my R220 so I
prefer the full UT-R2 set. I like the look of Eboni, though. I've
yet to experiment with my R1800 but once I get a few minutes I'll try
the 3MK approach.

Hi.
I'd like to add, that I've been refilling prefilled 3-mk carts from
mis, you might need to change the fill plug on some, but other than
that my experience says they're the same as empty's, just with ink.
(UTBO-T0540-41-48 EK - http://www.inksupply.com/R1800_bo.cfm)

A MK question on the side;
is the PKN and Eboni inks compatible ... can I use carts for 3pkn(with
RC-NTL-4-PK) in the same positions as the 3mk setup: mk-pk-go, and
just switch when I use either, without clogging? Or should they be in
separate slots?

Thanks,
Espen

Re: R1800 for Paul Roark

Thanks, Roger and Espen both. I found them on the MIS website just fine.

I am still puzzled a bit... these code numbers are sometimes so close,
and I find that sometimes different code numbers appear to be used for
the same item when the item appears in different parts of the site.
For example, if these are the same as for the R220, my invoice shows
that I have been using these for my R220:

MP-T0481K-SLC pre-filled with Eboni ink
and
SLC-2400-E empty cart (it is described as usuable in both the R220 and
the R1800, as you say... as well as some others. So the physical size
of all these must be the same.)

So if these are the same as for the R1800 as the ones you pointed me
too, it's odd that they would use different code numbers.

Guess I've got to stop trying to figure out their system and just go
for it.

It probably refers to the different chip on the cart- the cart is the
same but chip is different.

That makes perfect sense, Roger, thanks, I didn't think of that. I'll
look at this more carefully.
