Edge effects

Edge effects

2008-05-04 by Richard Smallfield

Hi,
Eric mentioned edge effects and it's something I've experimented with a bit, but never exhibited in a show.

I've tried painting a mask onto some A4 paper, scanning it and then overlaying it so that the photo looks painted on - digital 'liquid emulsion.'

But I've had less good results with creating really effective sloppy borders. Has anyone found good ways to do this? Sometimes they can look great.

Most edge effects actions etc I've seen have been awful phony frames.

I just did that - the good ones are quite expensive - and the bad ones are awful - much worse than what I can do manually with several layers. Maybe I just need to get one of those expensive programs when I get paid for something.

Richard I'll send you an action that I made and use. In short though, you
make a new canvas a bit bigger, fill with white. Then magic wand that to
make it your selection. Expand it by ??? How much edge effect do you want?
Then apply a brush application along with a curve or levels adjustment. I
normally use curves but it is image dependent. Then do another selection and
contract or expand it. Al of this is mix and match to get you an effect that
floats your boat. : )

You can clone the image into the selected new canvas and blur it. The
possibilities are truly limitless. You might also look into Auto FX edges.

Re: [Digital BW] Edge effects

2008-05-05 by Shoshanna Moser

For a number of years now I've used both Photo/Graphic Edges from AutoFX
<http://www.autofx.com/products/PGE/detail.html> and PhotoFrame from
onOne Software (formerly Extensis Products)
<http://www.ononesoftware.com/detail.php?prodLine_id=10>, and have found
them to offer a comparable range of extremely versatile, very high
quality effects.

Of the current versions, Photo/Graphic Edges 6 and PhotoFrame 3, I
prefer the latter, which is slightly less expensive, has a more
user-friendly interface, and, in my opinion, a more interesting
collection of edge effects.

You may find it useful to know that their edge and frame files are
interchangable-- an edge effect from PhotoGraphic Edges can be used in
PhotoFrame, and the other way around, as well-- and edge/frame effects
in several file formats (including jpg) can be used by both plugins.

This is not software that every photographer would necessarily need or
use-- and very few people would have any reason to purchase both
programs-- but there have been quite a few circumstances in which I've
found it very helpful to have available the options they provide.
Either one would be a good investment.

Best wishes,

Shoshanna
