OT: Proposal disposal or recycling of dead Epson printers?

OT: Proposal disposal or recycling of dead Epson printers?

2008-05-14 by mkirschner

My two C86's died last week (almost too strange for coincidence), and
I want to dispose of them properly.

Does anyone know if:

1) They might have toxic metals etc., like computer monitors, etc, and
should be disposed of in a similar manner?
2) If they have any value (I'd actually give them away minus
cartridges) for spare parts etc?

Thanks,
Mitch

These days, *all* electronics should be treated as if they have toxic
metals. While printers have a pretty small amount of electronics in
them, disposing of them properly is, I think, important. I suggest
you contact your city or county government and ask them if they
operate or recommend any electronics recycling programs.

At least here in Portland, Oregon we have a non profit called Free-Geek
that takes all electronic things and recycles them or refurbishes them
to give to low income folks. Also our city runs a recycling hotline to
put us in touch with the recyclers for anything you can think of.

So I agree, contact your city recycling program and...

BRAVO! for doing the right thing; can we clone you???

Hey Scott,

I wish I could clone myself sometimes!

I actually live in Portland. Of course...I'd forgotten all about
FreeGeek. I'll check with them first to see if they're even interested
in broken (probably beyond repair) printers. Failing that I'll go with
an electronics recycling program.

Thanks all,
Mitch

I highly recommend trying to give away dead printers for parts first
(look for Freecycle or forums like this).

Second would be manufacturer take back programs like this one from
Epson (I don't know details)
http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/Recycle/ProductChooser.jsp

Third would be to find info on a local hazardous waste or electronic
waste recycling day put on by your municipality or county.

How weird that we live in the same town!

Metro recycling is (503) 234-3000
Free geek is (503) 232-9350

By the way, I run a free, private, no spam email notification service
in Portland for photo lectures, exhibits and workshops in Portland and
have 320 of us Portlanders on the list. Care to be on it? I also run
the Camerawork Gallery and can get you on the art card mailing list for
that as well. Contact me off list if you are interested.

Cheers!
