Doubts, as usual...

Doubts, as usual...

2008-06-06 by fabozzism

Hello there,

I contacted the Italian dealer of Piezography to buy inks to convert
my old 740 Epson printer to B&W.

The answer sounded scary: "It would be wise to buy a new printer, it
is a bad procedure to convert an used one. This conversion would block
the heads of the printer in a short period".

Following your experience, I understand there were some successfull
cases of "used printers B&W converted". I'm now a little bit confused...

What's your opinion?

I mean, I discovered the dealer is selling a "starters kit for B&W"
with a new printer and K7 in bundle: could this explain the
"political" answer I got, or it is true that convert to B&W an used
printer could raise "blocking" issues?

Personally, I think it would be better to clean perfectly the printer
and then, for the first days, use it intensively with Piezo inks to
wash out perfectly the system. Don't understand waht could be the
problem if in the past the printer used color inks, considering also
that I'll be obliged to change the ink kit as Piezo needs a spongless one.

Thanks for sharing, again, your experience and ideas.

Cheers,

Stefano

they are sadly misinformed. It's safe to say everyone here using a 3rd
party ink set loaded them into a "used" one.
Perhaps they are new to all of this?

Just use flush carts to clean the printer.

I use the Carbon 6 base that Paul developeed (only because I had it
available) and added ammonia and isopropyl alcohol.

I have converted 3 different printers that way, and converted them back
to Epson inks, with no problem. That includes dye inks, the Carbon 6
ink, etc.

I have not used the Cone inks, but many others have with no problem.

Best,
Michael

Printing can be an extreme sport. The dealer is hedging himself and for good reason.

If you can purge effectively, what could the problem be?? The 740 is quite old and I have used them. I think my 640 is quite dead.

Ciao Stefano,

Non e' vero!

I used an Epson 1160 with the OEM inks for a while then changed to Piezography inks -
though at the time it was the first kind available (and later Piezotone inks). While the first
ones did have some clogging problems there was nothing I couldn't fix, and the latest
Piezo inks are much better vis a vis clogging. It was definitely worth the effort! I'm not
familiar with your model Epson but I don't think there is any inherent reason you can't run
some flush carts to get rid of the old Epson inks then replace with Piezo inks, providing
your printer is working well and all nozzles check out.

The only reason I'd buy a new printer is if there are any problems with your current one.
You do want to get perfect nozzle checks and alignment if you are going to use the Piezo
inkset. I've now got a 2100 that I'm about to convert to Piezo after using it for quite a
while with the Epson inks.

Thanks to all for the answers. :-)

I'll definitively go for flush carts, then use Piezo inks.

Cheers,

Stefano
