So what's new in this printer? Chromatic Red ink??? Wonder if that will be available for the Z3100? John Nollendorfs --- In DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@yahoogroups.com, "Wayne J. Cosshall" <dimi@...> wrote:

I didn't see a lot that jumped out as new; but I was quite suprised to see the phrase "gallery-quality black and white and color prints"... A phrase lifted wholesale from Datacolor's marketing materials, and which I recognized immediately, having struggled a good deal crafting the phrase in the first place. I guess we should have copyrighted it! C. D. Tobie WW Product Technology Mngr. Digital Imaging & Home Theater DataColor.com CDTobie@DataColor.com

The black and red head is also changed to the Z3100 one. I will ask today why ? but I guess it is a 4 picoliter version where the Z3100 one had a 6 picoliter for Red. That should translate to different dithering/weaving/color control etc. I wonder whether the B&W actually is improved, the Z3100 B&W is already very good. Could be smaller black droplets too but will the Dmax then be as nice as on the Z3100. There's a new HP Baryta paper too, more suited for the Vivera pigment ink. I guess we should have copyrighted it! In the digital buzz word world, "gallery quality b&w and color prints" sounds pretty generic to me. Kinda like trying to copyright the phrase "Have a nice day" in the real world. I give you both credit for not using the term "giclee", however. Jim Rohan Jim Rohan Imaging

Yup, it is unclear to me just how much of an improvement the Z3200 will be. Will have to wait till I can try one. The paper sounds interesting. Cheers, Wayne Wayne J. On rolls. > No chance that the new Red will appear on the Z3100. The Black/Red head change is not related to droplet size. B&W printing isn't changed. Speed about 20% higher on the Z3200. The new paper transport rollers are used on the Z3200. More 16 bit features but I couldn't grasp all the information on that (his English was worse than mine and no other language possible between us). Some driver issues solved, some issues still there. I foresee even more compatibility issues with Qimage if their intention to automatically eliminate double profiling issues between Photoshop and the Z3200 driver is added in further upgrades. Told them (again) that the default CM setting in the B&W printer shortcut is in contradiction with their own CM recommendation for B&W printing. That was still in the Z3200 driver. Mentioned the different Z3100 owners experiences on print lengths and the lack of a banners mode to overcome that length issue when using Qimage. Could be a good reason to use one of the other brands for potential customers. No comment on my question whether a 17" with similar technology will appear, "everyone asks that" is what they say. At least they noticed that. Mentioned that the latest firmware upgrade for the Z3100 is available for Mac users but the Windows one still isn't after they had withdrawn the corrupted installer for it. They had noticed that it wasn't available on the site anymore but didn't know the reason. -- Met vriendelijke groeten, Ernst | Dinkla Grafische Techniek | | www.pigment-print.com | | ( unvollendet ) |

Hi Wayne- I've had the 3200 for a few months, and I am very happy with it. The biggest improvement is certainly with matte (and to a lesser extent, but still noticeable with gloss) media and saturated reds, especially dark saturated reds. For most photography not a big issue, but welcome nonetheless. For painting reproductions, a big improvement. I don't believe the reds are going to be improved in the z3100 [image: sad.gif] The other big improvement is the ability to adjust how much GE you use. I had printed on GFS with the 3100, bad gloss diff and bronzing. The 3200 and the 3100 with the new driver allows GE to be adjusted by a large degree, both less and more GE. GFS prints beautifully! You can choose whether or not to cut the leading edge of gloss papers- Nice! But I can't figure out why you would want cut them; that's another story. You can choose to skip the alignment check when you load sheet paper, which for quick proofs is helpful. For final prints, I always check the alignment. The new HP Baryte paper is beautiful, and I have been very happy with the B/W as well as the color prints on it. So far, the nicest B/W paper I've printed on. Nice finish, and nice feel. Could do that with the Wasatch Softrip on the Z3100 and it really improves the control on gloss, semi gloss but the Wasatch isn't good on the Z3100 11 inks control. Has the image only GE application changed too that it will print RGB 255 in the image? That's what the Wasatch also does correctly. I have made a profile for a paper to get that right with Photoshop + the driver but use a printer filter curve in Qimage to fix that for more papers, no influence on the image itself. -- Met vriendelijke groeten, Ernst | Dinkla Grafische Techniek | | www.pigment-print.com | | ( unvollendet ) |

Don't know, Ernst. I usually use full page GE. Not sure why not to. Thanks for all your reporting from the show. Thanks Bill, that is most useful. I've just got my Z3100 running again after it was inactive for a while during the setup of a new joint studio for my wife. That's all done now, so we have a decent place to work, her painting area at one end, my computer/printer area at the other and a nice shared center area for framing, etc. Ahhh, it is nic eto be printing again.
