Advantage to use Qimage rather than ABW with an Epson 3800?

Advantage to use Qimage rather than ABW with an Epson 3800?

2008-10-12 by Jean-Marc Humbert

Hi,

I print with an Epson 3800 almost only B&W pics.

Use for that the ABW Epson driver option (option: dark) (with a 51
gray step .icc profile through Datacolour spectro, such profile being
applied with PS CS3 when I come to print and proof setup) on
Hahnemuhle Fine Art Peal and Fine Art Baryta (the latest being on the
top with brilliant darks).

I read very positive opinions on Qimage (in particular for upsizing
the prints with a very high dpi ratio).

What would be the advantages to switch to Qimage instead of using the
profiled Epson ABW driver as I do? (for upsizing I go with the addon
Alien Skin Blow Up). I print on A3+ and A2 papers. Is it possible to
keep ABW option and B&W profiling with Qimage (I downloaded the demo
Qimage, put it seems very confusing)

Thank you for the input!

The advantages? Where do I begin. The greatest one is that you never have to use the
ghastly PS/Epson interface to print again. I just don't understand how it has lasted so long
without improvement.
Ok. In Qimage you can drag more than one file nto one sheet of paper. It's worth buying it
just for that, but hold. You at to use your own profile. easy you just choose it and it is
active and you always see it's name to make sure it is the right profile. Changing to a new
one is easy, unlike with PS/Epson whereyou need to go nto so many sub menus that you
need a university degree to get it right.
And talking of more than one image on a pice of paper, when you have many, Q will sort
them into the best spacing to save you paper. I find that pretty important as my paper
costs £4 an A2 sheet ($8).
You can add tints, position each image acurately on the sheet and review how it will look
on each sheet. you can save the whole setup easily if you want to print the same thing
again. As you say upsizing and dpi is totally organised for you.
Just buy it. It has a few 'quirks' but they are outweighed by the advantages. Believe me you
wont look back. It saved me from cracking up. It's like a new car for me even a cuple of
years later. I love using it.

Hi Jean- Marc;

I've been using Qimage for color work for years, and you're right it
is a confusing interface, and has gotten more so over the years. I
use it primarily to throw several pix on one page with individual
captions, something it does quite well. I would do some carefull
upsizing comparisons before bothering with it-I'm not so sure any
number of other programs aren't just as good, though having Qimage do
it 'on the fly' is convenient. As for ABW-Qimage does not have its
own driver, it uses the Epson driver, so you can still set it for ABW
and either apply a profile through Qimage's color management. But
honestly, unless you need the proofing/compositing features in
Qimage,if you're getting first rate results, why bother?

Why do you think it is a confusing interface? What's confusing about it?
