RGB vs. Monochrome

RGB vs. Monochrome

2008-11-12 by Stephen Kobrin

Every once in a while, I forget to change the mode to monochrome after
I convert to B&W in PS3. After layers are added, it is impossible to
convert from RGB without flattening the file. Question: does it make
a difference whether you work on a B&W file in RGB or monochrome? 99
times out of 100 I catch the problem before I print and send a
monochrome file to my 2400 in ABW mode.

Thanks,

Steve

Not true, select the option of do not flatten.

And it makes sense to work with those layers in the luminosity mode rather
than normal. While it does not happen all the time or anything more than
rarely, I have seen slight changes to a file. So when working on files that
are RGB looking like monochrome, best to work in a mode that reflects that
thinking.

Hello Stephen,

In my tests I never found any print quality advantage to RGB over
grayscale. I do find much advantage to the 2/3 reduction in file size
of grayscale in that various manipulations in PS are much quicker (not
to mention reduced storage requirements).

However, there are some techniques and/or 3rd party products that
require RGB files, such as color-to-bw conversion apps that emulate BW
films, split toning techniques, film grain emulators, and edge effects.

I don't use any of those so I go to grayscale first thing after the
color-to-bw conversion or neg scanning. For me the smaller file size
is a major consideration.

Clayton

I'm not certain of the meaning of this sentence. Are you saying the
problem you catch is sending a monochrome file, or that you catch it
and send an RGB file? Maybe it's just too early for me and I haven't
had a coffee yet. I'm under the impression that the 2400 ABW prefers a
grayscale file over an RGB. So I always convert to grayscale for the
file size reasons Clayton mentioned and to sync properly with the ABW.
Maybe I should get that coffee now.

Sorry for any imprecision. I always send a monochrome file to the 2400.

Thanks to all who replied.
