Gravity IV system for Epson 9600 printer

Gravity IV system for Epson 9600 printer

2009-04-24 by Walker Blackwell

Hey everyone. I'm building a septone print workflow that prints with a
form of fluid that I don't want exposed to either air or myself during
setup. I also need to be able to flush the ink-lines for every print
run of 2 40x50 inch prints. The fluid is really expensive so I want to
use only enough to flush the lines (using air-bubble gaps to make a
clean separation between flush fluid and printing fluid) and to print
2 40x50 inch prints per run. Each photograph will use pretty much the
same amount of each shade of ink. At first I thought about using
virgin ink-bags and carts, but syringing this stuff out and shoving it
into an epson cart messes with the cartridge alignment, ink delivery,
and ends up leaking fluid. My second thought was to use Cone's bulk
tanks, but this exposes the stuff to air too soon. It's fine if it
gets exposed to air right before it runs through the print-head. I
also need a completely clean cartridge every time I do a print-run and
I can't really clean Cone's carts totally.

So my thought is to use IV bags and modular gravity-based IV system
hooked to each ink-line. The IV's would be maybe 1/4th-1 inch above
print-head to keep a good flow of fluid but not too much pressure.
This way I can just hook in a flushing syringe and then a fluid IV
bag. Everything is sealed and clean and leak-free and still gravity-
fed just like the 9600 carts.

The problem is, everything I'm looking at needs a doctor's
prescription to order. Even though there's no needles involved, just
to get a freaking IV bag and IV line, you have to have a prescription.
Does anyone know of a similar system that doesn't require a
prescription? Is there any way to get a "research" prescription for
something like this? Any doctors on the list? :-)

Your help would be most appreciated,
all the best,
Walker Blackwell

Go to a vet, they will sell them to you. Of course we need a photo of
this printer to see afterward, and be sure to send one to Epson:)

In hospitals they go through bags of normal saline and sets of tubing
like they were sheets of newspaper. If I uncapped a set of tubing and
dropped it on the floor by accident, I would just get a new set. If
you asked a hospital if you could have discarded tubing and empty
bags, they would doubtlessly say no, and you would likely not be
comfortable with tubing that had been connected to a patient, even if
that patient had no infectious process going on. But if you knew a
nurse who would put aside clean sets and bags for you- bags often get
spiked but then not used, for instance-in a fairly short period of
time you could have a supply of these items that were just going to be
thrown away, anyway. Bags are good because there are various ways to
fill them, if you have syringes and needles, and blunt needles are
fine, both also easily available to any nurse, and ways to get most,
if not all, of the air out. And normal saline is about as benign as it
gets as far as interacting with whatever you want to fill the bag
with, plus you can get virtually all of it out before you start. So:
find a nurse who likes goof prints : )
