Ink Mixing by P Roark?

Ink Mixing by P Roark?

2009-04-30 by jag24x

Hi,

I'm about to go the Eboni 6 inks for my R1800 (1.5pl). I'm going to fill the remaining 2 carts with the Clear Base Formula from the Ink-Mixing.pdf P.Roark wrote.

Though reading it, it states that 1.5pl printers should NOT just use the PhotoFlo wetting agent/surfactant, but to also use the Edwal LFN wetting agent as well.

If I was using the "by weight" where it state 10% Kodak Photo Flo and then add 1% Edwal LFN wetting agent.
I cannot locate any Edwal LFN in Australia. I'd have to get it shipped from overseas. I already have the Kodak Photo Flo. Is there any other wetting agent I can add instead of Edwal LFN?

I've got access to formalin/formaledhyde and 95% clear alcohol, can I use either to help me out for the Edwal LFN? :)

Cheers

More info: The reason I want to create and use the Clear Base formula is to ONLY fill the 2 cartridges with that base. I won't be using the base for anything else, just to keep the printer happy that the 2 ink cartridges are full of something! :)
It's not worth buying the Epson OEM glop and matte ink to keep replacing the cartridges.
My thinking is just use the clear base instead, unless someone can tell me to not worry about the clear base and use something else?

That's if you want smooth printing. If the clear base is just for keeping the nozzle from drying out, it'll be fine with no Edwal LFN.

(By the way, Edwal LFN is available in larger bottles that would making shipping overseas more reasonalbe than the usual 3/4 oz. size.)

(A little isopropyl alcohol is actually used in some inkjet bases. It also may be a fairly good cleaner. I found is less effective then the other wetting agents, however, and if there is more than about 1% you'll start to smell it.)

Hello,

I use the exact same setup as you will for PK and GL. Simple clear base from Paul's formula. I did not even bother with the Photoflo. Simply water and glycerol. Never had any problems. The Photoflo is there with regards to surface tension and required if you use the base for a "printing mix". If you want to be on the safe side, just use Photoflo and do not worry about the 1.5pl of the R1800 for these two channels.

Maybe Paul has a better recommendation.

I've just made up a batch of C6 inks using Paul's instructions
(thanks, Paul!) and it works great on my old 7500 -- even without the
Edwal LFN. I wasn't able to find that locally, and figured I could
always add a bit later if I needed to. I'll probably try to include
it on the next batch, but for now I'm happy with the mix.
