Monitor recommendation

2010-01-08 by Lew Schwartz

It looks like I'll be purchasing a monitor in the near future. What
recommendations can the list make without sending me to the poorhouse? I'll
be doing digital b&w exclusively.

Say $1000 max with the proviso that I'd spend more if I got a whole lot more
for it, and I'll spend less if I feel that the features don't warrant the
expense.

I have LaCie 324 that I like. Unfortunately I got it when I was still
running 32bit OS, and when I upgraded to XP 64bit last summer it turned out
that the LaCie's calibration software "Blue Eye" is not compatible with my
64bit OS. Oh, and their customer service was is a pity.

The monitor has performed great, though.

Hi Lew,

How about an Apple Cimema Display?

I'm thinking of picking up one myself. My CRT's getting old.

I'm not into Apple, but I do like their monitors.

FYI. Apple monitors look good, vibrant color, bright, and
contrasty, ..... but they are very hard to calibrate to real world
printing. If using a monitor profiling software it is all but
impossible to turn down the brightness enough to calibrate.

If you are honestly only concerned about B&W printing then you certainly don't need a wide gamut display. That will save you a bunch of money right from the get go.

Next, make sure you've got a PVA or IPS panel. And make sure you are buying a model that is known to not switch panel types. This is a frequent problem, make the first few batches with nice IPS panels and ship those to reviewers. Then keep the same model number but switch to a crappy MVA panel instead. Dell and HP are frequent offenders. Unfortunately you really need to do your homework or pay a bit more for something like a NEC if you want to know 100% what you are getting.

What size is a big question.

Finally, definitely find user reviews on the monitor for the above mentioned reason - monitor companies make sure only the best go to the reviewers for the first bit of production. After that - well it is hard to say what will happen. Dell has a monitor out there now that they advertise as using a specific panel technology and meeting a specific delta E. Problem is they only test it in the center of the panel and people are getting truly horrific magenta to green shifts in tone from one edge to the other. Dell's response is, "It is within our spec, since we only measure the center, so kindly go pound sand".

This is the best resource I know of:

http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=39226

Again, the major point is that the "awesome" deals to sometimes be had from Dell, HP and the like are sometimes fraught with peril.

Good luck! My experience is researching and purchasing a monitor sucks :(.

I have just replaced my two 19" monitors with the NEC MultiSync 3090W-BK-SV 30" Widescreen LCD Display with Color Calibrator from B&H. I am extremely pleased with it. No dead pixels, very even illumination, great profiling hardware and software. Extremely configurable. Kept me away from the Apple products and didn't break the bank like other high end brands who's prices just get rediculous. Couldn't be happier!!

Eizo CG222W, 22" diagonal, 1,424 incl shipping, from InkjetMall. Includes Eizo ColorNavigator software, and support from Jon Cone and his people in addition to support from Eizo. I've had mine for 2 months, real nice for B&W.

Which monitor for B&W only?

That's a very interesting question that I don't think I've ever seen asked before. All the advice you normally see is based on color gamut and calibration capability being of utmost importance. Since you're only going to use it for B&W, it would seem that a wide gamut, highly accurate color reproduction monitor, ie, expensive, is not needed. It would seem that you only need to be able to calibrate so black and white point are properly shown and then the intermediate tones are displayed in relatively correct (linear) manner.

Is this correct? Does this much more narrow need (than for quality color work) really require the premium monitors that people here are suggesting???

I've gone from an Artisan to a brand I never heard of. My research came up
with a monitor that has the same panel (read guts) as the NEC 2690, which
sells for $1400.
The brand name is Planar (Play-nar), and the model is the Planar PX2611W.
It is a 26" screen, was easily calibrated with my Eye 1, and is a joy to
work with.
I found a 3rd party hood, put it on, and I now have a shielded screen that
really does a fine job. The cost was $835.00 delivered.
I highly recommend this approach. Google it.

Rich,
Where did you find the third party hood for your 26" monitor?

_Computer Monitor Hoods | Photodon.com_

Works great. Adjustable sizes. Measure the actual width across the top of
the monitor, not the monitor "size".

I screwed up.

Heads Up! New Monitor just announced

Dell just announced a new monitor called the U2711. It is 27 inches and
boasts 110% of Adobe RGB gamut. The preliminary reports say it
addresses the issues that the U2410 had. It looks really promising.
One price listed says $1049. Here is the link to the CNET test reviews:

http://reviews.cnet.com/lcd-monitors/dell-ultrasharp-u2711/4505-3174_7-3
3913833.html?tag=mncol;txt

They compare this monitor to other lower priced monitors but it would be
interesting to see how it compares to the high end monitors.

Thanks

mike
