Anybody using an R290 for B&W?

Anybody using an R290 for B&W?

2010-01-26 by Peter Marquis-Kyle

Has anyone here used third party cartridges in an Epson Stylus Photo
R290 printer? This is a model sold in Australia, similar to the R280
but, according to Epson, it uses cartridges with different part numbers
from the R280.

See http://www.epson.com.au/products/inkjet/stylusPhotoR290.asp for a
data sheet.

I have one of these, which I have been using for printing CDs and DVDs
using the standard colour carts, but I'm interested in changing it over
to a mono inkset.

I'd like to know what sort of cartridge-filling, chip-swapping and
re-setting I might be up for, and would appreciate any advice.

I have a R285. That's a European type number. I'm not sure if it's the same as yours. It's an A4, 6 ink, 1.5 pl printer. I have it loaded with UT3D inks in self-resetting cartidges I bought of Ebay. The supplier is UK-based. This is his e-mail adress: dreamweav2000@.... He's very helpful and responsive.

The ink setup is probably a bigger decision than the cartridges.

Thanks for the suggestion, Joost. It prompted me to do some web
searching -- I found an Australian supplier who advertises auto-reset
carts for the R290: http://www.inkbank.com.au/category79_1.htm

Here are my first thoughts on that subject: I have just printed a
white-to-black gradient through QTR using the standard Claria black
only. I was pleased to see (through a 4x loupe) no banding at all. So I
am inclined to go for Eboni K (for printing Black Only on matte paper)
and MIS pigment colour inks (if they sell suitable inks, and if I can
work out which ones to order), so that I can continue using the printer
for colour printing of CDs and DVDs.

I use the MIS K4 color inks in my 260. You'll need new profiles. A good profiling system would be best to make those, but I have a crude layer that works reasonably well.

Paul,

Apologies for dragging color into this, but how did you go about profiling MIS K4 inks on R260? I used to get very nice result on R280 using Gutenprint and customizing many details about it in config files (most importantly how it goes between C and LC) and then profiling it. With Epson driver results were too far too out of whack to successfully profile (too dark and cyan with some other weirdness). Unfortunately my modifications crash current version of Gutenprint in Snow Leopard and I don't have patience to debug it. Results were really fantastic for $100 printer except for lacking a slot for glop.
