Image quality display differences

Image quality display differences

2010-02-03 by paulekohl

I just noticed something that I can't figure out. Perhaps everyone knows about this and I am just very slow on the uptake. I have been working in Camera Raw and Bridge and then into Photoshop of late. I just realized today that the way my image displays is vastly different in PS than it is in Bridge and Camera Raw.
The PS version is flat tonally and not as sharp, whereas the Bridge and Camera Raw versions are crisp and at least one contrast grade up. The Camera Raw version is much better than the PS version.
What is causing this difference? Which one can I trust? How can one edit an image if you can't rely on what is on the screen. I mean, at least the different software displays should match, right?
Any insight into this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Paul,

Look at the bottom of the camera raw dialog box. See what the output settings are you. You may be overly enlarging the image or it may be too small or the color prefs aren't correct.

you can also set Camera raw to "sharpen for display only". I.e. I presume
that means it sharpens the image for display, but doesn't actually sharpen
the file on disk. Hence you see something different in Camera raw to PS.

I have to withdraw my question about the differences I found in the
displays I was seeing between PS and Camera Raw. The problem was that
in Photoshop I was looking at a non-updated version of the image I
had worked on in Camera Raw....
Sorry to bother...
