MIS inks and Epson 7800

MIS inks and Epson 7800

2010-02-01 by edgarangelone

I appreciate your responses in previous topic regarding MIS inks and Epson 7800. I have contacted MIS (inksupplies.com)and they do not sale Ebony inks any longer because of problems they were having. They can however sale me the UT7 Ebony 100%, which apparently they claim is better than the Eb6. So my question is:
Could I buy the UT7 100% Ebony from them and dilute according to Paul Roark's paper (Epson 7800 PDF) with they base solution???
Is this base solution the same or similar as the solution that most of you mix yourself??
Is this UT7/solution combination archival like 100% pigments??
Can I use it with HPR, and other well know matte papers??

Thank you so much, I guess all of you got me started in this journey.

Edgar

Do you mean they are not selling Eboni-6 carts for the 7800? I just bought
(last week) 4 oz bottles of Eboni-6 to re-fill the pre-filled Eboni-6 carts
I bought from MIS a month ago for my 1400.....so they are selling
eboni-6......

See http://www.inksupply.com/eb6.cfm for Eboni-6 bulk inks.

MIS wants to be sure people understand what they are buying. Basically, that means they want them to be on this list or to have read my PDFs on it for their printer type. Eboni-6 may not be appropriate for beginners. It is matte only, medium warm on most papers, and must be agitated in wide format printers. MIS has had too many novices buy it without understanding the nature of the inkset.

The UT7 inkset may more suitable for beginners or those who want to print on both matte and glossy paper with tones that can vary between cold and sepia. It was, however, never intended for the 7800. You'd want to use QTR to control it with k3 printer. Profiles for UT7 on a 7800 may not exist. (I've never made any for that combo.)

This is what I do: http://www.paulroark.com/BW-Info/7800-EbHp.pdf

The "Carbon-6" I mix is a user-mixed version of Eboni-6, which MIS mixes and sells.

MIS does not sell a base that is suitable for diluting Eboni as far as I know. The base they use for Eboni-6 (assuming they are using what I specified based on the samples they sent to me) is not compatible with Epson UC inks. So, be sure to flush the printer before installing. My generic base <http://www.paulroark.com/BW-Info/Ink-Mixing.pdf> appears to be compatible with the UC inks. Still, I'd flush the old ink out of a printer before installing any new inkset.

> Is this UT7/solution combination archival like 100% pigments??

UT7 is 100% pigment, but not 100% carbon pigments. Eboni-6 and Carbon-6 are 100% carbon. Carbon pigments are significantly more lightfast than color pigments. UT7 and other commercial B&W inksets that are neutral in tone always have carbon that is toned cooler via color pigments, because carbon pigments are warm by nature. Eboni is the most neutral carbon, but still medium warm when diluted. The color pigments used in the blended carbon + color inskets will fade faster and differentially, which will cause tone shifts -- although this may take a long time.

I dropped the UT2/UT7 sepia after fade testing showed the mostly color pigment sepia to be too unstable to be considered a professional grade ink. If you want sepia, the best you'll find is Jon Cone's Carbon Sepia. It's not what I consider a true sepia tone, but it is quite warm.

All of the inksets discussed here will print on HPR and the other matte papers. You may need to make your own profiles, however. So, if you're not experienced in that, be sure to buy into a setup that has support for the papers you're interested in.
