Talking about Cone, it helps to remember that his primary business used to
be digital printing. That is, his current business of selling inks, etc.,
is based upon his knowledge of the end product. To me, his expertise is
important.
I look forward to seeing whatever he has up his sleeve.
I've been waiting 2 years to get to a CIS and inks. Still using Epson
carts. Yesterday I told a prospective client that the prints would last
about 22 years (Epson HWM and OEM inks, on a 1270). And, I also said I
used to be happier when I made B&W's in my darkroom and could say they
would last for generations.
We're moving toward that point, no?
Bill

Mike,

it seems that Jon has some things in development he doesn't want to discuss
or disclose. Who knows. As we all watch this technology evolve, the inks
and
papers constantly evolving with more players and end-users coming into this
arena, the going will get tough.

But I wonder: How many piezo customers are there? Of those, how many buy
other than inks and software from inkjetmall? How much profit does all this
make vs the overhead of running the operation and keeping up with tech sup?
I feel supportive of Jon's efforts for delivering such a great product and
supporting it as well as he and Bill Berg have. Beyond that, the reality of
the
marketplace and economics takes over. If a competing product does the same
for less, so be it. But I still wonder, at the end of the day, what the
dollar
figures are behind the 800+ people on the piezo list and the 200+ people
here. It's probably why Epson hasn't spent the R&D yen....

Bill,

Cone Editions is still very much alive and well using Iris and other
printers to make print editions for artists in a number of mediums.
Jon has a tremendous amount of experience and on the Inkjetmall site
there is a page containing articles about Jon and his work, which is
worth reading. I am sure he is hard at work on the next generation of
PiezoBW.

If you are not happy telling your clients your prints are only good
for 22 years, then you should be trying a quad tone ink se, either
pigmented or dye. Any of them are going to offer you paper/ink
combinations that will do better than Epson's 22 years. You could go
back to saying your prints will last generations.

Thanks, Martin,
I meant to imply that I had a high opinion of Cone and that I am waiting
for him to offer a cis for the 1270. I hope a different message did not
come through. I know he still has a renowned printing business. I wanted
to express that I am depending on that expertise to assist me via his inks
and papers.
I should have been more clear. The prints I am denigrating for having a
life of only 22 years are color. That's why I'm anxious (does a two-year
wait indicate anxiety?) to begin working with a CIS and more archival inks
and papers. I did try loading carts with my 1200...enuf said. Then, when
the 1270 came out, I thot, this will do it. Then, I went to a 2000 -- as
soon as the first ones were available -- and got rid of it even faster.
C'mon cis!
If I get any more anxious, I will have to think about an alternative
printer where Cone already offers a product.
Regards, Bill

Bill,

I am not 100% certain, given the topic of the list, but I assume you
are looking for a CIS/printer combination for B&W. ConeTech has
announced that they are going to release PiezoBW for the 1280 but
will skip the 1270. My understanding is that while the two are
mechanically very similar from a software point of view quite
different. I have been waiting for Piezo for the 1280 myself for
quite awhile.

My own decision and suggestion is to go with a 1280 and the MIS VM
inks. When ConTech comes out with their 1280 version you would be in
a good position to try that out as well.
