EB6 paper recommendations - neutral

EB6 paper recommendations - neutral

2010-03-06 by Mike Johnston

Hi,

I got a new Epson 1400 and set it up with the MIS EB6 inks.

I had some Epson Ultra Premium Presentation Paper so I tried it.

I really like the prints. There is a lot of detail I never saw before and
a lot more shadow detail than I saw with an R280 and Kirkland paper.

The prints are a little warm and I would like neutral prints.

Short of replacing the black with the HP black, which papers
will give the most neutral images?

Paul Recommends Premier Art Smooth BW but that is a little pricey
for a hobby.

How neutral will Red River papers be?

Any other recommendations?

BTW, I printed on the Kirkland Glossy and the results were pretty good.

There is some bronzing and there is kind of a 3D effect but I liked it
more than I thought I would after reading about this ink an glossy.

Thanks

Mike Johnston

See http://www.paulroark.com/BW-Info/Eboni-6.pdf at p. 8 for some information.

See http://store.ultrafineonline.com/brecsa190brw.html for the remaining stock of old Brightcube Eclipse. It is relatively neutral and affordable.

Hi Paul,

I am a little confused about Premier Art Smooth BW paper.

There are two listed on the MIS web site.

PREMIER ART HOT PRESS FINE ART

PREMIER ART MATTE BW PAPER

Premier Art's web site indicates there is a smooth hot press BW.

I have not found any supplier other than MIS that distinguishes or mentions
BW.

The prices on MIS for the BW paper seem very reasonable.

Can you enlighten me?

Thanks

Mike, Premier seems to have caught the name changing bug from epson some years back. The Premier Art Hot Press is a natural paper without Optical Brighteners and comes in a number of weights and single/ double sided in some weights. It is very bright for a non OBA paper

The BW (Bright White) is similar but has OBAs.

Within matte papers most of the paper manufacturer's seem to agree on Fine Art as a designator for a rag paper; Hot Press for a smooth paper, Cold Press for one with texture, Natural or non-OBAs explains itself and either BW (Bright White) or some designator that it is a brightened paper. Most manufacturers offer something in these two types (brightened/unbrightened) of paper and can be competitive. Everyone also offers their upper tier papers that you have to take one at a time for comparison.

I was looking for double sided BW from Premier some time ago and they did not have the double sided version. Others do have a BW paper, some cheap, some expensive. I ended up with Moab Entrada BW as it comes double sided and I am very happy with it and I can get it locally. (one caveat, it needs a good stiff brushing with a horsehair brush before printing) I believe Red River has a BW fine art matte also. There was a post from Ernst Dinkla about a double sided Canson paper that is very bright without OBAs: Rag Photographique Duo. I have some waiting for me in Providence if I can get a chance to get up there and pick it up. My local Utrecht only carries it in 10 sheet packs, so the couple I ordered where a tad expensive. if it works out I think it might be available in 50 sheet packs at a much lower pice.

The whole OBA issue is real unfortunately. some of the worst, like Epson's Ultra Premium matte (or the old name still in use, EEM or Epson Enhanced Matte) can go yellow in days even out of the sunlight.

I don't think MIS sells the Smooth BW. Neither of the 2 above are what I recommend for neutral dilute Eboni printing. Go to Atlex.com for the Premier Art Smooth BW.

The Hot Press MIS has is, I believe, the 205 -- Premier Art's version of Epson Scrapbook. The Matte BW is a highly brightened paper. I think it might be discontinued now.

Hi Paul,
I got some of the Premier paper.
I am a little confused.
there is a sign in the package that says print on this side.
The side indicated is darker than the other side.
Is that correct?
Thanks

That does sound odd. I have some packages that say to print on one side, and they've been correct. I have another package that says nothing. I think the coated side is brighter. I'd use the tongue test to be sure -- the tongue will stick on the coated side (corner), but not the back side.

[Digital BW] Re: EB6 paper recommendations - neutral

My packs of Premier Art FineArt 205 have a slip in the package which says "print this side only". But their website describes it as "C2S" which means coated both sides. The two sides don't look any different to me. So I e-mailed Atlex and they said to ignore the sign, that I could print on either side.

I usually save my "bad" prints and use it as work paper, printing on the remaining side for tests.

Ok,
I ordered the wrong paper. The link you sent me was for the 200 paper.
It is pretty neutral on both sides.
The correct side tends to get stuck in the printer.
Does this kind of paper normally have a pretty sever curl side to side?

Thanks

Cheaper paper that is coated on just one side tends to curl towards the side
with the coating.
That's why more expensive papers are coated on both sides to reduce any
curling, even if the intent is just to print on one side. Mike

The papers the print most neutrally with Eboni-6/Carbon-6 are the Premier Art Smooth BW papers.
See http://www.premierimagingproducts.com/pm_smoothbwfineart.php

The 200 gsm usually does have a curl. The 310 does not have a significant curl in my experience.
