New Release of QuadToneRIP 2.7.0 for both Mac and PC

New Release of QuadToneRIP 2.7.0 for both Mac and PC

2010-03-28 by Roy

QuadToneRIP version 2.7.0 Release Notes

This is a new release for both Mac OS X and Windows

Support for new Epson 3880 printer
Bug fixes:
R2880 Manual Roll print positioning fixed

!! Mac Users take NOTE !!

Major Upgrades to the Mac version of QTR Software:
8-bit and 16-bit image data supported -- from app to driver.
32-bit and 64-bit applications now supported.

With this release only Leopard 10.5 and Snow Leopard 10.6 are officially supported.
Version 2.5.2 can still be used with Jaguar.
Version 2.6.2 can still be used with Panther and Tiger.

Attention to Mac users of Photoshop CS4 and Lightroom 2.1 under OSX 10.5 Leopard
There are color management problems with B&W printing with both Epson ABW and QTR.
Until that is resolved its best to keep CS3 loaded on your machine and use that
for printing.

!! Windows Users take NOTE !!

Major Upgrade to the Windows version of QTR Software:

JPG files are now supported as well as TIFF files.

The Windows implementation does not pass the data through
the print system like the Mac version does. So 16-bit data
changes noted above to not apply to the Windows version. However
QTR continues to use all 16-bits of a TIFF data file for
creating a print.

QTR works with all the current versions of Windows --
XP, Vista, and Windows 7 in both the 32-bit and 64-bit flavors.

Is the print centering problem with the R1900 fixed in this release?

Question: Print Problems-Mac/OS 10.6/PS CS4/Eps 2400, 2880

2010-03-29 by Barry Snidow

We are experiencing erratic behavior with color management on both B&W and color with Mac 10.6/ PS CS4 /Epson 2400, 2880 in our student labs Roy's email acknowledges bugs with this combination, although we have had trouble finding documentation of this online. Anyone know of info/fixes other than printing through CS3 (not possible due to license restrictions).

Thanks in advance for any information.

Dear Roy,

Thank you for the new version. I have installed and printed with no
problem.

An improvement that I find somewhat irritating is that there appears no way
not to see JPGs. Let me explain: I am sure that my work-flow is not too
unlike that of others, I work on my photos as PSD files and when I am
satisfied with those, I resize, sharpen and save as TIFs for printing. I
also also save a small JPG version for the web or whatever. Naturally I
don't want to print the latter. But now I see both the TIFs and JPGs via
the GUI, which is confusing and I may have to work my way through quite a
few files (2x) until I come to the one I want to print. Any way round this?

Yours,

John

What if you were to name all your JPEGS with a _ in front of them,
will it put them in front or in back of the list then?

How about sorting your files by Type -- click twice and the TIFFs are at the top.
I would usually drag a file to QTRgui from my folder listing.

Dear Roy,

Thanks, that is a good solution. I had always selected teh file from within
the GUI.

By the way, QTR is a great bit of software, I have used it for some years
now and have printed for several exhibitions. Now I am tempted to move from
my venerable 2100 to a 3880!

Yours,

John

John,
last year I moved from the 2100 to the 3800 and, like you, had printed several exhibitions on the 2100 - you wouldn't regret the move I can tell you!

I get the results I want quicker with the 3800 - it seems to be more precise. My profiles seem to be more accurate - and generic profiles are more often now all I need. The K3 inks make Ilford Gold Fibre Silk a perfect paper to use; I can get away without spraying FB prints to get rid of bronzing; square photos are now an appropriate size. And the printer is small for a 17" and fits most work spaces - or in the boot of the car when I travel.

All in all, it was a huge step forward for me - even if constantly having to change blacks and purge the ink lines is ridiculous (it's all very well to say don't change too often but when you print for clients, you do end up constantly changing blacks). And the rear feed is temperamental (turning off the automatic paper check fixed the problem - but sometimes the paper has then not fed at all, despite the 'printing' having been done - on the insides of the printer).

I've stayed with QTR and not changed to ABW, because: 1 - it's accurate and I don't want to waste time perfecting the use of a new method when I've got the results I want with QTR already; 2 - looking through a loupe reveals the fact that there is less colour ink used with QTR.

Other makes have advantages - such as not changing blacks - but QTR is a very compelling reason to stay with Epson despite their bad points.
