cv tape echo module.

perhaps you could do this with a tape cartridge that would be front
loaded on the panel. or maybe use a standard cassette tape mechanism
and use "looping" cassettes as the cartridges. (these are pretty cheap
and there are lots of different lengths, from 10 seconds to 20
minutes). then have cv control over feedback, echo & tape speed. then
also have a "sound on sound" loop record mode where you could have a
gate signal trigger the record function on/off. also, and i am not
sure if this is possible (and definitely not if you were to use the
"looping" cassettes"), but it would be cool to have the ability to
reverse the tape as well and have the direction controlled via cv with
a gate signal.

hello david,
that sounds very interesting, but:
would something like this be doable dieter?

Hi Bakis

> would something like this be doable dieter?
I am not Dieter, but let me jump in here: I experimented a lot with tape
based delays and tried also something similar with modified cassette
players.
Result: Forget it as a module. Forget cassettes. I think Dieter does not
want to reinvent the videotape mechanism for audiotapes.
Cartdrige-drives (which might make it a little bit easier) are closed to
unknown and unavailable here in Europe (at least I have never seen them
here).

What might be interesting: an CV-interface for well known tape decks
like a Revox B77 or PR99. These already have Control-Inputs for the
capstan speed, which should be easy to be interfaced with the A100.

hello florian,
ok, but,
what special feature this "cv interface module for
tape machines with cv control of tape speed" would
offer? i mean that any cv source of the a100 can be
connected with a cv input of a tape machine that has
cv inputs (i used that with my korg stage echo se500
that has cv input for tape speed and works fine. it is
a standard +5 to -5 volts cv input anyway).
regards,
Bakis.

A "Control-Input" doe not necessarily mean CV controllable! I don't know
the detailled techniques for different tape machines. As far as I
remember the PR99 has an socket to which an external potentiometer can
be connected, but I don't remember now, how this potentiometer is
integrated in the internal schematics of the machine.

Finally all I wanted to say is: the economical and musical success of a
tape based module is not worth the effort of developping and building it.

hello florian,
ok, you're right regarding the "control input". i do
not know about other tape machines really. the korg
se500 has a standard cv input though.
dieter what do you say regarding a possible tape echo
module?
regards,
Bakis.

AW: [Doepfer_a100] one more idea...

Sorry - but we have absolutely no experience with such mechanical stuff and
I don't think that we will be able to offer such a module. But the AD/DA
module (the version with memory) will cover a lot of these applications.

Best wishes

Hi Bakis,
the next wish will be 35 cartridges to emulate a Mellotron M400, or a Birotron with tape loops! :-) I think, maybe it would be an interesting thing, but I see it more as a standalone unit like the old Korgs, Rolands, Binson, Dynacords and so on!
all the best
