Controlling Doepfer with Roland SH-101

Controlling Doepfer with Roland SH-101

2006-07-17 by beatboxgestapo

Hello,

I have a Roland SH-101 that I use to control my Doepfer modular
system via CV & Gate (not midi).
I haven't used it for a while, and I have noticed a problem when I
tried to record with it yesterday. There is always a constant tone
coming out of the Doepfer even when I am not pressing a key on the
Roland SH-101. I have the CV and gate going out of the SH-101 into
the VCO and the gate of the ADSR of the Doepfer respectively.

It does play and change notes when I push the keys down on the SH-
101; it's just that there is always a tone coming out of it when
there are no keys being pressed. I have played the Roland SH-101 by
itself, and everything seems to work. There is no sound coming out of
it when there are no keys being pressed. (It is quiet when I am not
pressing any keys.)

Another issue I have discovered separately from using it with the
Doepfer is that when I hook my Roland TR-606 to the SH-101 I am
unable to control the sequencer with the TR-606. (The sequencer in
the SH-101 seems to work fine when used by itself when not connected
to the TR-606) I have also tried another Roland drum machine (Boss DR-
110) to control the sequencer in the SH-101, but the same thing
happens. So I feel it isn't the drum machine.

I figure the problem may be with my Roland SH-101 and not the Doepfer
or TR-606 since the 101 is always at the root of each hook-up. Does
anyone here have any ideas what it might be? Or if it is something
other than the SH-101? Or do I just have the Doepfer hooked up wrong?

Any help is much appreciated.

Thank you,
The Beatbox Gestapo

Are you sure there's not just gain dialed up on the VCA of the A-100
system?

As for your 606 and 101 problem, I used to get the same problem with
my SH-101. Be it that I was trying to trigger the sequencer from a
606, 808, 909, MAQ, or Schaltwerk, some notes would hang, some
wouldn't trigger. Some people would say that it may be due to the
purity of the clock signal coming from the drum machines, but that's
impossibe as the same problem occurs with different devices. It's
gotta be some defect in the SH-101 itself. But then again, over time,
the problem seemed to have corrected itself.

No, it not the gain. I tried it with the gain turned down to "1" and
I still got it. If I press a key that note will sound until another
key is pressed, then it plays that note forever.

As for the 606 and SH-101. I have linked them up before, and no
problems. I'm starting to think something in the 101 is bad.
Something having to do with the cv/gate out and the external clock in.
Maybe there is a common chip that controls both of them.

Thanks for your help!

Does the sound disappear, if you remove the connection of from then
SH-101 Gate-Out to A-100 Gate In.

It would be very good, If you would describe your patch in detail.

Hmm, how do you sync the SH-101 to the TR606. The only supported way
would be, to connect LT or HT trigger out to the clock-in of the SH-101
and then programm 16 beats of the corresponding tom per bar.
