Wooden Doepfer cabinets?

Wooden Doepfer cabinets?

2006-08-30 by brownchonald

Hello,

I'm new here, and am considering going the Doepfer/Eurorack way.

Are there any cabinets, like the old Moog Modular cabinets, for
Doepfer modules?

I don't like the way the suitcases look. I want some wooden.

I know of www.nice-racks.com, but I'd like some that is a little wider
than just 19 inches. Is there anywhere I can get something like this?

Thanks guys,
Cole

I don't know about the ones you can buy, but I built one myself,
although I'm not a good/experienced woodworker. In fact, I'm a quite
bad one... The cabinet itself is not that big of a deal (well, you
have to invest some time, but it's not that hard to build it
accurately), but I had problems with the "rails", which in my case are
wooden... I wouldn't do it that way anymore, instead I would go with
the standard-rails, that Doepfer-cases use. It's hard to get good
screws for wood in that tiny size, and if I want to move modules, I
have to be very careful not to break the wooden bars. (I had to use
thin ones because I built a sloped cabinet).

Hope, that helps a bit,
-Michael

Hi Michael,

I'm in the process of planning the build of a wooden cabinet for my synth. After several
months of searching the net and taking advice from this and other fora, it seems the only
way is to home-build, or commission a carpenter to build a bespoke cabinet. Like many
others, I'm making a sloped bank. Mine will be 6 rows high (2 at 45 degrees, 4 at 80
degrees) at 168HP wide. I have opted to avoid the wooden rails as this just seems a poor
choice from an engineering point of view. To keep the wood-working easy, I'm simply
screwing in some 19" rack uprights to which I can mount standard cases. Again, for
simplicity, I have opted to make it 2 x 84HP, rather than trying to make a 168HP wide
cabinet (I have dealt with Proma before. Although they were really helpful, they (like many
other German companies when I lived there) do not accept credit/debit cards making
payment really difficult. In the end, I resorted to buying Euros and sending the cash. Far
from ideal). I'll be stripping out the enclosure around the standard cases, leaving only the
rack ears and the horizontal rails. This will keep down the weight and reduce the depth
required. I can also mount my 19" rack effects with their home-made breakout panels.

I had a look at some beautiful English oak today, and it should come to around £100. I'll
also be looking at some reclaimed timber over the next few days. Using cheaper wood
(e.g. Ikea shelves are really cheap) or even MDF which can then be covered or painted
would significantly bring down the price, That said, after spending so much on modules,
it seems a shame to skimp on the case.

As for mounting rails and rack stuff, check out eBay (as ever). I got some stuff there ( I
currently have a home-brew 19" rack case).

Good luck,

Stuadh

Have you considered getting in touch with Bob at Analogue Systems. He produces
beautiful wooden cabinets.

See http://www.analoguesystems.co.uk/rssystems.htm.

I think all his cases are fitted with Doepfer power supplies as standard these days and a
complete row of Doepfer modules will fit without any gaps.

I've got an RS8500 cabinet (no Doepfer modules in it yet) and it is a thing of beauty.

The case wasn't cheap: as I recall, a bit more than £1,000, but that includes all the rails,
power supply and trunk lines. It is a beautiful piece of joinery. It even smells nice. I never
felt that I had paid too much for it! The RS8000 would obviously be a good bit less
because it's half the size. But the RS8500 will swallow a lot of modules and it looks just
great.

Bob Williams specifically told me that if you devoted a row to Doepfer modules then they
would fit perfectly: it's only if you mix Doepfer and A Sys modules in one row that gaps
appear.

Do get in touch with Bob. He's very keen to help and knows his stuff.

no longer sold seperately by analogue systems :(
