A-188 BBD 1024 Stage Module problem?

A-188 BBD 1024 Stage Module problem?

2006-09-21 by deepelement

On the A-188 BBD 1024 Stage Module, is it normal that it emits a really high pitch sound
when the delay clock knob is between 1-3. This happens when the output is to the mixer,
and when nothing or something is plugged into the module itself. It seems to happen only
when the polarity at the very bottom is either on + or -. Its quite annoying and I was
wondering if its normal because it doesn't exactly sound that way.
Any response would be amazing.

hello,

you are not speaking of the clock noise?
the clock gets audible when the delay time is long.
is that noise you are describing something different?
if yes, does it help when you reduce the feedback?

howdy,
thanks for your response!
the noise comes from the delay clock knob when it is positioned between 1-3 (long delay
times). i believe that is the same noise we're talking about. but the variable high pitch
noise stays if i reduce the feedback or do anything other than change the polarity on the
very bottom switch.

hmmm if you are talking about the clock noise intruding the signal
at long delay times, then this is normal. you have to use a
lowpass filter at the bbd-output to remove the clock noise.
if you are not sure that the noise is comming from the clock,
then maybe you can record a short mp3 or so and upload it to the
group, so we can take a listen?

let me just first off by saying thanks for helping me out.
so here is whats happening. this is a direct out of the bbd out (bottom left) straight into
the computer, nothing else is plugged in. the delay clock starts at 10, then goes down to
one, then back to ten. repeats. the whine comes in at about 4 (im sure sooner for peopel
with better hearing)

thanks for the help!

Yep, clock noise.
You have to use a low pass filter on the output.
It's the only way to get rid of it.

Which signal is used for audio input of the A-188-1 for this MP3 ? I assume
none but maybe I'm wrong.

If this is true you will hear probably the dirt effects of the BBD because
at position 4 the BBD is already out of it's specification (i.e. already
less than 10 kHz BBD clock). Please refer to page 3 of the user's manual
(remarks).
And you should operate the A-188-1 with a full level audio signal (as close
as possible to clipping) as the A-188-1 is an audio signal processor but not
planned to operate without audio input signal.

More details about the dirt effects of the A-188-1 (and their adjustment)
can be found in the A188-1 adjustment explanation:

thank you for all your support! i finally understand how this is supposed to operate now.
