Allen Strange A-149 patches

Allen Strange A-149 patches

2006-10-08 by j_inform3r

In the A-149 manual it lists that the Allen Strange book "Electronic Music Systems,
Techniques, and Controls" has some patches for the Buchla Source of Uncertainty but they
could be applied to the A-149 as well. I was wondering if someone could scan these
particular pages and post them? The manual says that the patches start somewhere
around page 80.
It seems like the book is no longer available from the publisher so perhaps this isn't unfair
to anybody. I would be more than happy to buy the book but I only see used copies
available for around $200 and I think thats ludicrous.
It would even be cool if anyone could transcribe the patches and just post them here as
ideas.
Thanks,
John

to be honest I can't even access the "book" to check the source because it is a digital edition and my adobe reader insists that i am not the owner of the book and it has to access some f-ing microsoft .net passport site - which is down and keeps disconnecting me from the net - so I can tell this book on my own computer that I am who I say I am. I just wasted 20 minutes on it

so my advice is to keep looking for a photocopy - its ridiculous to buy a text under these kind of restrictions - I will never do it again

I finally got in to the bloody thing. Its the second edition and there is a whole section in the chapter entitled "control voltage sources" around page 80 based on s/h type noodling. I got it from www.mhhe.com/primis/online

its a great book, but a shit website and a shit service, even Mr Strange himself was somewhat embarrassed when he gave me the link - not that it is any reflection on himself

.......and unfortunately for you I don't own a scanner!

Re: Allen Strange A-149 patches

2006-10-09 by andrew dalio

Well, after years of having the first edition, I finally decided to
download the second (twice as many pages and updated by ten years...).
First, I needed to update Adobe Reader to a version that accepts DRM
encoded files. About an hour of downloads, installs, troubleshooting,
etc. Then the process of McGraw/Hill's ebook. Upload all your info to
the site. Upload all your info AGAIN to order the book. Download the
book (about 45M). The reader checks your DRM and you're off. In all,
it took about 3 hours, mostly to me being ignorant (tried doing it on
my Mac, and had to switch over to the Windoze machine to actually get
anything to work...).

The drag? In order to read the file on a computer other than the one
you downloaded it on, you need to sign up to Microsoft's DRM network,
have a live internet connection, punch in more personal info. Then and
only then, you can do a "save as" on the orig file and bring it to
another computer. If you want to read it again, go through the
authorization process again. And so on... It gets to be a drag for me,
since not all the computers here are connected to the 'net, and you
need to be for the DRM authorization. The only other drag, as has
already been pointed out, is the page scans aren't all clear,
especially RE: illustrations. It looks like a scan of a Xerox copy of
the book.

The plusses? Hey, it's the only way to get a legitimate, authorized
copy of the book for fifteen dollars. Anyone trying to buy a college
textbook knows what a bargain THAT is! Not to mention that the second
edition is really a completely NEW book; I'm glad I have both!

I downloaded it and printed it out and then photocopied it, so now I can
read it anywhere :-)

So would somebody be so kind as to post some examples regarding the Source of
Uncertainty? Greatly appreciated.

IMO the Strange book seems more like an analog synth beginner's book
and many may outgrow it rather quickly. My favorite is "The
Technique of Electronic Music" by Thomas Wells.

Hmm, though Alan Strange's book is very good readable for beginners, I
think, it provides also elaborate knowhow for professionals.

I have to admit, that I don't know the Book of Mr. Wells.

A-166 logic module

2006-10-11 by Richard

Hi

Can anyone give me practical examples of how this module might be used? I have A-149.1 and 2 and A-160 and A-161 already in the system

I use the AND gates with the digital outs of the A-149-2 and another
pulse generator to create very intermittent gate events.

If you use the XOR gates with a random pulse (whose trigger rate is
synchronized to the clock) and a clock at audio rates (use a frequency
divider for good results), you can achieve really good pitched noise
effects, similar to Atari 2600's sound generation scheme. The 166 has
a maximum input frequency of a few khz, but it does sound really cool
when it starts aliasing.
http://musictechnology.northwestern.edu/~meatlog/digital1.mp3 is a
recording of such a patch. The other gate outputs are mixed in for
thickening (with the AND output out of phase), and the whole thing's
run through the BBD.

thanks Scott - and that's some pretty severe music you've got there!
