Hi group !

Hi group !

2002-03-21 by electricbeats_eof

I've looked through the various yahoo groups forums and this
seems to be the place to be when you are going modular.
My plans:
I'd like to get a modular synth to use in my home recording
environment and so I've been looking around and at this year's
musikmesse I walked by the great superbooth and had the time
to listen to the doepfer as well as the technosaurus and the
analogue solutions...
In terms of money the technosaurus is out of question, leaves
the choice between the doepfer and the A/So. As far as I could
figure out (always difficult/impossible @ the tradeshowfloor) the
doepfer's sound is more 'pristine' , than the A/Solutions which
has more 'liveness' , a different character.
With our project we go in various musically directions combining
d&b,house with jazz and chilling tracks as well.
Emphasis is playing live.
The reason for getting a modular synth is also to add a different
character to our Minimoog and Moog Source (a great synth)
beside using it as standalone synthesizer.
Here py plans - any coments more than welcome...

What I'll be starting off with will be the doepfer A127 ,A125 - the
AS SY02, the EG02,VCO 02,SY02 from A/Solutions.
I'm not sure which LFO to get - I'd like to have control over the
dutycycle of the wave to be able to generate pulses as well.
The A/Solutions WCO-WT seems interesting too - anyone of you
owns this module?
I need MIDI - Anyone experiences with the doepfer 191in live
environment? Is this the thing to get?

What do I have to take care of when combining these modules in
one case?

Thanks for your thoughts...

hello klaus,
welcome to the group!!
first of all i would like to point out that this group wouldn't
really be "alive" if there wasn't the very big help of many members
who know a lot about modular synthesis and electronic circuits!!!(you
know who you are...:-) ).i,despite being the moderator, know nothing
about electronic circuits ,but i think i know some things about
analogue sound synthesis and modular synthesis...at least,i try...
now ,about the a127 and the a125:well i love my a127!!!(it's the best
for ever evolving sounds/ambient stuff,3 12db bandpass filters with 3
lfo's...),and also,i like very much my a125.(i have recently ordered
4 a125's more!!!)o.k.,i can't really compare the phaser with similar
modules of other companies as i only have the one from
doepfer...sorry.also,i have no A.Sol. modules, but the VOSTOK pin
matrix synth looks very,very nice...
as for the a190 midi-cv/sync...good module, but it's better to buy it
with the a191 if you want more control of vc parameters over midi(and
you gain an extra ,midi syncable lfo...).if it had an lcd or led
display would be much easier to edit,though...(my opinion.)
bakis.

oh...and something else,
when you combine modules in the doepfer rack you have to take care
for the total modules power consumption not to exceed 650 mA!!! that
is how much the power supply can handle(unless you want to mount a
second power supply inside the same doepfer rack(you can do it...if
you know exactly what to do and ask roland mayer and know about
electronics...)

Getting modular

2002-03-21 by Andreas Lindholm

Mixing Doepfer is something I have thought quite a bit about, but still not
made reality. I know that doepfer modules can be fitted in the AS-rack but
it is like a 98% fit so it cosmetically will not look perfect. On the other
hand AS can't be fitted into the Doepfer rack as far as I know. Guess it can
if you are a circuit master, but Doepfer makes not kits or converter cables,
right guys?

As for midi-cv modules the AS seems better in all aspects except beeing
slightly bigger in size. I will go that route myself soon and buy an AS case
for midi-cv and something more...

As far as doepfer goes there are some must haves in the A136 and A129/3. the
a136 is very cool and something I haven't seen anywhere. I totally adds a
new flavour to the sounds. The A129/3 is a very hand module to tweak cv
signals to the right amount. Yes it cost some but you get five separate
channels.

As for VCOs a lot can be said and I plainly state that neither of doepfers
VCOs are perfect, the A110 tracks badly and the A111 has imperfect square I
have heard. As for the AS I have no clue.

This is actually a bit of blasphemy but as things are today I myself would
very carefully look into VA if I was going modular from scratch again.

hi andreas,
well VA is one thing and real analog is another!i myself have the
nord micromodular and i love it,but if you're willing to give some
money nothing beats a real modular...
about the vco's the a111 is tops as it have linear FM!!!with it you
can do many unusual sounds...i love it!!!also, the a110 sounds
good ,too...(fatter than a111???)
again,i can't compare them to other companies vco's,as i don't have
any...
bakis.

Re: [Doepfer_a100] Re: Getting modular

2002-03-22 by Andreas Lindholm

Well... we all know the obvious differences between pure A and VA, but still
when I bought my A100 there wasn't even a VA to consider. So I just thought
it deserved pointing out cause it takes a hell of a lot of space and money
to get a 32 voice or even a 16 voice true modular, but it is almost petty
cash for a VA and by now I think they have gone from poor soundquality to
marginally inferior. In fact quality isn't the right word for it is more a
case of different sound, right Bakis(you can compare)? And there are no
glitchy cables in VA =)
