Changing the LFO speeds/crossover points (lo,med,hi)

Changing the LFO speeds/crossover points (lo,med,hi)

2007-05-20 by Stu Grimshaw

hi people, and in this case, especiallly dieter,

i received a few days ago an a-146 LFO 2, and i'm a little frustrated at the point at which i
need to switch from one range to the next. bang in the middle of the range of what i
would use to produce "normal" expressive effects, i need to flip the switch and twiddle the
knob :)
the first half of the medium range is not something i would use as an expressive device,
ditto for the upper half of the hi range (i'm naturally not suggesting that there are no uses
for these speeds).

so my question is: is there a way to either a) change the crossover points or b) get all three
ranges to start at zero and cover the range up to their respective maxima ?

cheers,

stu

Sorry for my late reply but I was not in the office last week and had
problems with the Yahoo messages (probably because of the installed
autoresponder) and did not receive some messages.

There are three capacitors on the A-146 pc board. C1 (680pF high
range), C2 (100nF mid range) and C3+C4 (both 2.2u, low range). If the
value of a capacitor is increased the corresponding frequency range
becomes lower and vice versa. If you e.g. double C1 to 1nF the high
frequency range goes down about 1 octave (i.e. the period time
doubles). The capacitors are just behind the frequency control and
marked clearly C1, C2, C3 and C4.

Best wishes

okay, that's what i was hoping to hear. thanks for taking the time to answer my question
dieter.

given that adding a capacitor is easier than removing one - never did get the hang of
those solder suckers - do two equal capacitors in parallel produce half the capacitance,
like resistances ?

and another question to the group generally (in case someone's still reading): can anyone
recommend a good supplier of reliable electronic parts in germany ? there's a conrad
round the corner, but i've been dissatisfied with so much that i've bought there. this
should be a new post n'est-ce pas ?

thanks for the help,

stu

Capacitors actually work the opposite to resistors. Two equal value
capacitors in parallel will have double the value, two equal
capacitors in series will have half.

No it's the opposite. Two equal capacitors in parallel double the capacity
and consequently even double the period (or half the frequency)

We never had problems with Conrad though we order only very little from
them. And with capacitors there should occur no problems. If you need only a
few capacitors you can get them for free from us if we add it to another
module order (or if you send an envelope with stamps). Capacitors are cheap
(about 0.10 to 0.50 Euro only depending on the value) and the shipping
charges are probably more than the capacitors.

Best wishes

hi dieter,

apropos small components: can i order a quantity of jack sockets from your firm ? the
ones i get from conrad are okay on the quality side, but the thread is too short to be
usable with holes drilled into the... er... blindplatten (sorry, english guy loses his mother
tongue).

the holes were drilled and i intended to build a couple of passive modules and do a little
modest circuit bending, but when people say "ooh, that looks interesting, what does it do
?" i have to bow my head in shame and mutter "nothing yet".

Segor in Berlin stocks them:

You can get the sockets as spare parts but have to order from the
representative in your country. I don't know your home country.

So you simply order from us directly. Details in the pricelist
