What modules to make Drum machine?

What modules to make Drum machine?

2007-08-22 by chrismousdale

Hello, Im a new comer to the world of modular synths, and i am really interested in creating
my own drum machine from doepfer modules - I have looked around and around for help on
this, but to no joy. There was a post on here from 2 yeas ago, but the guy actually bought
Drum modules from Analogue solutions.

Im more interested in creating my own drum sounds from scratch and be able to have the
flexibility to tweak..

So my question is - what would be he most basic modules i could get away with buying to
make my own electro drum sounds ? Or is that a neverending question?

Thanks.

For tweaking, nothing beats a modular :)

Have a look at http://www.modular-planet.de/modular-planet-survey.html -
there are some drum patches to listen to and look at for inspiration. In
addition to the modules you'll see there you may want to get an A-155
sequencer for easy control, the A-160/161 combo is also good and you'll need
an LFO to drive them. Also, a couple of multiples is a good investment, as
is the A-162 trigger delay as it can add "swing" to your drum patterns and
shorten or lengthen triggers where needed.

Happy patching,
Silas

would it not be better to use a saw wave from the lfo putting out, for
example, 8ths, going into a comparator which then produces the even
numbered 16ths (triggers) ? just set the comparator to output a
trigger at about the half-way amplitude of the decreasing saw slope,
and then adjust to your shuffly tastes. this has a major advantage in
keeping the shuffle feel constant whie you adjust tempo - a trigger
delay would have to be adjusted along with the tempo. i'm not sure
that adjusting trigger lengths is much use with drum sounds that are
going to need envelopes anyway.

I guess the bare minimum to make bread & butter drum sounds would be 1
VCO, 1 noise generator, 1 ADSR, 1 logarithmic mixer and 1 VCA

Instead of a VCO use a filter that can self oscillate, much better for
most drum sounds IMO

Other Knobs possible?

2007-08-23 by verstaerker

hello

i just updated my system with a lot of modules - while working with these modules i noticed that i often have problems turning the knobs,
because they are
1. hard to turn and
2. very narrow together

so i'm thinking about exchanging the knobs by other ones (for instances those smaller ones used by cwejman)

is that technically possible and what do u think about building in the future modules with those kind of knobs

regards
tino

I like the idea - I just don't have a comparator so I haven't toyed
with it. I still like the trigger delay for making short (5-15ms)
triggers for clicks, though.

Re: Other Knobs possible?

i don't know the slimmer knobs, but i agree that the doepfer pots
could be easier to turn. obviously, it's nice to have a certain amount
of resistance when you're turning, if only for the more solid "feel",
but i find quick tweaks on stage very difficult. and a one-fingered
tweak without the thumb (or only the thumb) is not possible.

smaller knobs, while increasing space, would make turning more difficult.

i suppose it's a matter of priorities - the stiffness of the pots is
never an issue when i'm setting up that killer patch at home :)

We (at Doepfer) will not change the knobs as the appearance of the modules
has to be maintained from my point of view. The A-100 is on the market since
more then ten years and I believe that customers who already own an A-100
will not be happy if we change the appearance. But it's up to each user to
replace the knobs by other types. All knobs with 6 mm splined shaft type (18
"teeth") are suitable.

Best wishes

Thank you for taking the loyal customers into consideration. It is nice to
be able to maintain the look of a system.

Knobs are very easy to change anyhow...

The Rean Soft touch series (as used on the Plan B and Blacet modules) are
very inexpensive ($0.49 each quantity of 1 at Mouser.com) and may be a cool
change for some Doepfer users. These will fit perfectly.

For those with money to burn try the Davies 1900H (as used on the Serge
panels). It uses the set screw method and so it to will work on the Doepfer
modules. At $1.71 each (quantity of 1) they will burn through your modular
budget, but they look GREAT.

The D-shaft knobs Blacet uses won't fit on the pots used by Doepfer
unless you're willing to rasp off what makes them D-shaft knobs.

Sorry, havn't read the package insert since I know from experience
that the knobs coming with my B kits won't fit on the pots used by D.
However, YMMV.

The Rean Soft touch is available in BOTH D shaft and 18 tooth 6mm. Look in
the catalogue from Rapid or Mouser.

Hi group,

Thanks to verstaerker for finding a cheap source for the Re-An soft
knobs... I just got them today and put them on my modular.
Thought ye might like to see...

I got coloured knobs... I like colours :)

Feels better, looks better and the knobs are only 10p each. Postage
from the UK is quite pricey though even to Ireland.

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
