i can't find any audio examples on the net..the only analog phase shifters i've heard are the EH Small Stone and the MXR Phase 90, i'm interested in at least as good quality ...i'm covered on the digital end, but i want the ability to patch in to my Doepfer system, and there are some used mods available atm... thanks, rg [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

hello Ross,
i like its sound and use it very often.
lately, i am using the modular phaser more, but it has
a much higher price...
anyway, the 125 is a good phaser with a good price.
best regards,
Bakis.

How does the 125 compare to the Roland 100m 172 phase shifter What would I have to buy in the Doepfer world to get close? thanks Dave On 3/01/2008, at 9:54 PM, Bakis Sirros wrote: > hello Ross, > > i like its sound and use it very often. > lately, i am using the modular phaser more, but it has > a much higher price... > anyway, the 125 is a good phaser with a good price. > best regards, > Bakis. > > --- Ross Goniakowski <carfull@sbcglobal.net> wrote: > > > i can't find any audio examples on the net..the only > > analog phase shifters i've heard are the EH Small > > Stone and the MXR Phase 90, i'm interested in at > > least as good quality ...i'm covered on the digital > > end, but i want the ability to patch in to my > > Doepfer system, and there are some used mods > > available atm... > > > > thanks, > > rg > > > > [Non-text portions of this message have been > > removed] > > > > > > Bakis Sirros - Parallel Worlds / Interconnected / Memory Geist > [Doepfer_a100] group owner > http://www.parallel-worlds-music.com > http://www.myspace.com/parallelworldsmusic > http://www.myspace.com/interconnectedmusic > http://www.myspace.com/memorygeist > http://www.DiN.org.uk > http://www.musicamaximamagnetica.com > http://www.shimarecords.co.uk > http://www.rubber.gr > Athens-Greece > > __________________________________________________________ > Looking for last minute shopping deals? > Find them fast with Yahoo! hello david,
it has a different sound than the 172 i think...
i cannot say for sure, as i do not have the 172
anymore to check to which doepfer phaser modules it
comes closer...
if i had to get only one doepfer phaser, i would get
the 101-3 for sure.
it can sound from very smooth to very agressive and
extreme(with the right feedback patchings).
i can totally recommend this one!!
best regards,
Bakis.

They use both a six stage phase shifter with FETs as voltage controlled resistors. Even the feedback circuits is the same (positive feedback from stage 6 to input) Though I never had an M-172 for comparison available but I expect that they sound very similar. I'm not usually a fan of, nor drawn to phasers, but both are great, the vactrol 101-3 is one of my favorite modules, and it seems lame to to reduce it to "phaser" status. the a125 is very nice and useful as well, although a bit neglected here--loved the 101-3 so much was going to sell my 125, but they are very different and both are very useful. And both really work well in the David Tudor style feedback loop. So get both! the 101-3 is tops but the 125 is also worth having. -phil

Dear members, it seems that there were again problems between December 28, 2007 and January 03, 2008 with the messages I receive from the group. During this time I did not receive any messages and discovered this today as Anton reclaimed the missing answer to his message. The problem always appears if I install an autoresponder for my email account (in this case because of our Christmas holidays) as Yahoo then stops the forwarding of messages after a while. Best wishes Dieter Doepfer Here is my response to Anton's lost message: > Hi Group, Dieter, > > I just tested the new modules I got this week and I'm sorry to say that > twice I got some unexpected behaviour. The 3rd button of the Manual Gate > does not seem to generate a signal. Button 1 and 2 are ok, no sign of > any physical damage, the sticker on the back says 'vortest', perhaps > that's a clue? As the A-164-1 is a very simple module we asked our manufacturer to test the module and we did not test it again in our company. Maybe this was a wrong decision. We'll have an eye to the other A-164-1 we still have in stock and test them before they leave the company. Please return the A-164-1 for replacement. I'd like to have the module back so that I can hand it over to our manufacturer and ask for a statement. > Also the Precision Adder is default connected to the bus board (it > immediately influenced the pitch of the a-111's that are in the same > case) but this is not the behaviour I want, because there's also an > a-190 in the same case, so I will need to adjust a jumper setting, but I > think there's not yet any exact information about this on the website. > > This last problem seems more serious because of the warning for possible > short circuit in the a-185-2 text. Especially new users could > maybe get into trouble if this happens to them and they are not aware? > Or am I getting paranoid now? Concerning the bus connection: the main problem is that the user's manual is not yet ready. Of course we will point out that the bus jumper of the A-185-2 has to be removed if another module is on the same bus board that applies CV to the bus. In principle the notes of the A-185-1 are valid also for the A-185-2. I'll add a note to the A-185-2 info page until the A-185-2 manual is ready.

thanks Phil for the reference to David Tudor which has peaked my interest about the 125. I love vactrols (and would like them in just about every module) and seemed to have missed the 125 altogether. Are these slowish vactrols? i.e. same kind of c/v response slew as the lowpass gate (either doepfer or plan b)? cheers Richard --- In Doepfer_a100@yahoogroups.com, "p. hendricks" <ph@...> wrote: > I'm not usually a fan of, nor drawn to phasers, but both are great, the vactrol 101-3 is one of my favorite modules, and it seems lame to to reduce it to "phaser" status. the a125 is very nice and useful as well, although a bit neglected here--loved the 101-3 so much was going to sell my 125, but they are very different and both are very useful. This may be best suited for Dieter. ? As I'm not certain how the vactrols compare-- I could look... and meant to but now the system is on... and I could only tell you if they're the same as the 101-2. But the ones Doepfer uses are different the VTL5C Series from PerkinElmer that Plan B and most others use. It would be great to know how they are related, and if they are interchangeable --any potential benefit or difference replacing with another Vactrol--assuming there is an equivalent? I love the 101-2 and the M13-- but they are very different, not sure if the Vactrol used contributes much to that....? (and just in case I mislead or someone reads this later, the 125 has NO vactrols but still is very nice, and I think worth keeping even with the great 101-3 around) best, phil

that's what I was wondering, cause I know that the vactrol response time in my wiard borg 2 is a lot faster than the borg I've used and my other low pass gates & I prefer the response of the slower vactrols. Richard --- In Doepfer_a100@yahoogroups.com, "p. hendricks" <ph@...> wrote:

Hi Ross > i can't find any audio examples on the net..the only analog phase shifters i've heard are the EH Small Stone and the MXR Phase 90, i'm interested in at least as good quality ...i'm covered on the digital end, but i want the ability to patch in to my Doepfer system, and there are some used mods available atm... Even later response! I just recieved the A-125 yesterday, so haven't had a chance to give it a really good run yet, but on first listen it has given my modular a nice additional sound shaping tool. Its sufficiently swooshy and swirly when required, as all good phasers should be. Jet and wind sounds are a "breeze"! Plus, I'm enjoying trying all of those wacky modulated phase shifts that I could never do on an effect pedal. The manual phase shift knob in conjunction with the CV amount knob allows you to kind of dial in a frequency band within which your phase shift occurs. Again, something that goes beyond the average pedal. Modulating it with audio frequency CVs at high resonance yielded some interesting results. Its not a module to use in every patch (eg: a guitarist probably wouldn't play every note through a phaser pedal), but a nice expansion module to experiment with. Soundwise, although I quite like the resonant tone from the A-125, I would say its not as "watery or coloured" (don't you love subjective sound descriptions!!??) as the EH Small Stone (which I own). Its perhaps closer to the Boss PH-1 (which I used to own). This would kind of make sense from Mr. Doepfer's description of the circuit. I'm guessing this also means that its likely to be close to the Sytsem 100 phase shifter (which I've not used). I belive the EH Small Stone uses transconductance op amps which yield a different resonant tone. On a final note: for me the A-125 was the right combination of price, straight forward features and size (I like the fact that it only uses 8HP in my rack). Hope this helps you and others.
