what will multiples do for me?

what will multiples do for me?

2002-04-29 by grove@zeta.org.au

Hi there,

I am planning my next stage in world domination - I'm organising
a G6 rack to complement my mini system.

Looking around, it seems a lot of systems contain the "multiple" module
in at least pairs or more. What do these do for me? I'm a little
unclear.

Also, given that I have an A190 MIDI/CV in my mini, how can I use this
to also drive the modules I'll be adding to the G6 rack?

Do I need one of those buss breakout modules or two?

I am planning my G6 rack to be mostly pairs of filters, oscillators
and VCA's plus the 4x mixer and perhaps an LFO or two.
What else should I look for?

Help me design my system!
I am not interested in building a theremin/vocoder system at this time,
more so in an expanded setup that can take external sources and
filter/mix them such as a sampler, audio out from my mac and other
keyboards &c.....

Speaking of multiplies... I will soon get my first 6u of analog systems. It
has something called active multiple jacks. I hope they are good cause the
passive in doepfer doesn't work for splitting unless you can amp it cause
you loose voltage on the way. So multis are good for many things agreed, but
they cause headache when trying to split cv for controlling pitch.

But non the less I think the same as the one who wrote 1 multi per row...

hi rachel,
what a multiple can do:you plug into it a cv or audio
signal from another a100 module and you can have up to
7 outputs of the same signal(in detail:you can use one
of the a180's jacks as an input and all the other
jacks as outputs.or you can split it in two by
breaking a solder connection and have two 4 jacks
multiples).so,you can send, for example ,an lfo cv
output signal to up to 7 destinations!how could you do
that without using a multiple?? :-)so,they are very
useful...

You can also use the multiple for non linear mixing as Allen Strange
says in his book. You patch two or more oscillators to two different
jacks/ multiple ins and use another jack as output - a simple mixer -
which will introduce a more profound beating of the oscillators.

Some examples:

LFO modulation to two or more VCOs for vibrato.
A190 Clock and Reset signals to both A155 sequencer and Clock Divider
Audio signal to two parallel filters
Filter output to two VCAs for stereo panning.
A141 ADSR output (there's only one, unlike the A140) to two or more
destinations.

BAD example:

Pitch CV to two or more VCOs. Use the system bus for this instead, or
you'll get a voltage drop resulting in the synth being out of tune.

The easiest way would be to move the modules around so that the A190,
the VCOs, and the ADSRs are all in the same frame. If it's the 6U
frame, buy one of those bus connectors (A-100 BC) to internally
connect the upper and lower bus bars.

If you want to connect the bus in the 3U frame to the bus in the 6U
frame, then you need TWO of the A185 bus access modules, one in the
sending (A190) and one in the receiving frame.

In my four-row system, I have a single A185 in the 6U frame that
contains the VCOs and the ADSRs. I patch CV/Gate in to this from
either the A190 (bus connection cut), the A155/A156, or from an
external source. This solved all my tuning problems.

I would put the ADSRs in the 6U frame also, so that they're on the
same system bus as the VCOs.

hi keld,
very useful tip, thanks!that's what you get when you're
not reading your homework.i've had the allen strange
book for many months but i haven't read more than
about 30 pages,yet...Now i know what i had been
missing...;-)
