A132-1 Troubles

A132-1 Troubles

2008-11-07 by achtung_999

Hello list,

I was wondering..

I ordered an A132-1 from Thomann last month.
I already have on for years and decided that it was time to get a second one.
It arrived by mail and only the top VCA seemed to be working correctly.
Believe me, I tested it extensively against the unit I already own.
Nothing to be done.. I exchanged it with Thomann, no problem.

Today the new unit arrived and it seems that this one has only the bottom VCA working!
Are there any other people, who recently bought one having problems with A132-1 units?

I'll test a bit more and then probably contact Thomann.. again.. sigh

Greetings,

Ernst

I'll ask in our sales department if we ever got back an A-132-1 from Thomann
for repair with this fault.
The A-132-1 is a very simple circuit (nothing but a linear controlled CA3080
OTA) and the only explanation I have is that the CA3080 used in the A-132-1
are defective. We discovered over the years that a small percentage of the
CA3080 becomes defective after a couple of weeks or months in use.

Best wishes

Hello Dieter,
I just tried switching the CA3080 around and indeed the switch showed that
the other part was working correctly with a good CA3080.
I will get some from my local electronics dealer which saves me the hassle
of having to contact Thomann again and send the unit back for the second
time.

I however tried switching the chips around on the first unit i had and that
did not work at that time! (of course I tried!) ;-)
So Thomann will indeed tell you about a defective unit!

Greetings,

Ernst

Let me know if you cannot get the CA3080 (it's no longer in production). I
could send you one to your address (directly or via our representative in
your country).

Best wishes

That's really nice Dieter, thanks!I'll let you know if I need it.
But first let me try the electronics store.
These guys sometimes have endless supplies of older parts.

Greetings.

Thanks for the offer. But I found a few CA3080's at my local electronics
dealer. These people have a nice amount of backstock!

The A132-1 is working fine now.

A-100 News

2008-11-14 by yahoo@doepfer.de

Dear members,

here some information about upcoming A-100 products:

Early in December 2008 we will have available:

A-100C15 patch cable with 15 cm length
A-137-2 Wavemultiplier II

In January 2009 these parts will be ready for shipping:

A-190-2 Midi-to-CV interface (modular version of MCV4 with glide function)
A-100P9 9U version of the A-100 suitcase
A-100LC9 9U version of the low cost frame

The 9U versions of the cases are the most economic solution for A-100 cases
as only one power supply (A-100PSU2) is required to drive three bus boards.
This is sufficient for nearly all module combinations. The prices of the 9U
cases will be only about 15% beyond the 6U versions but offer 50% more space
for modules. We also think about 9U versions of the monster cases (i.e.
9U/168HP, 2 power supplies, 6 bus boards) to offer more module space at a
lower rate.

The 19" metal frames (A-100G6) will be not available with 9U as the
manufacturer does not offer 9U versions of the frames.

Best wishes
Dieter Doepfer

I'm thinking of getting a Doepfer Suitcase at the moment. Are there any photos available
of the 9U version at the moment? I'm intrigued... is it just an extra 3U on top or is it 50%
extra width? If it is 3U on top, does it become unstable?

We also think about 9U versions of the monster cases (i.e.

lower rate.

The 19" metal frames (A-100G6) will be not available with 9U as the

manufacturer does not offer 9U versions of the frames.

Any chance it could come with multiples and maybe an atten built into
the case? Like along the top or bottom?

We are still working on it. The latest design based on charge transfer
principle is very reliable but not fast enough (max. about 20Hz only, and
that's too slow for fast play). We will try to make it faster but I don't
know if it will work. You (i.e. this group) will be the first who is
informed if new results emerge.

Maybe. We got a prototype of a metal bracket with holes for two multiples
from our (metal parts) manufacturer. We will send it to the case
manufacturer to built a suitcase prototype with this metal bracket instead
of the wooden bar. I have no idea if it will work but keep you informed. It
could be used for both 6U and 9U cases.

Dieter-
will it also come with the front mounted power panel?

Also you can just slot the wooden bar and mount a A-180 panel sideways
with wood screws (change the graphics or no graphics needed). I
haven't measured it to see if a 4HP panel would fit there but it would
be cheaper to do that than to drill a steel bracket I would bet. The
woodshop could notch the wooden bars super easy.

It's especially amazing since he apparently read my mind. Once I saw
Scaff's setup on youtube I was convinced 9U was the Zen of modular
case sizes, but I didn't say anything. :)

only on request. We plan to have only the suitcases with the power connector
on the rear side in stock (even the 6U versions) as in the meantime only ~
5% of the customers order the front power versions. If someone wants to have
the power connector at the front we will probably close the cutout at the
rear panel with a small plate and add the 8HP front panel with the mains
inlet, switch and fuse holder.

We have other plans: a metal bracket that contains two multiples of a
multiples and some attenuators instead of the bottom wooden bar. We are not
yet sure if one or two multiples or a multiple and some passive attenuators
are the better solution. Within the A-100 additional attenuators are usually
not required.
