Now that I've got my first A-100

Now that I've got my first A-100

2002-07-20 by Sebastian Schnitzenbaumer

Since I've really appreciated it how you guys have helped me
out finding the right module set, I thought I'd let you know
what happened in the meanwhile, I've got my new A-100M now.
I actually picked it up myself by car from the Doepfer headquarters
near Munich, I got it right from the production line...

This thing is without words. I'm totally thrilled.

Tested it last night with two of my friends in our studio.
We couldn't stop before 6 am in the morning patching this thing.

I'm like this non-professional hobby-type music guy. This doesn't
mean I don't take it serious, it's just that I earn my money with
something else (web software).

So being a software guy, this thing rocks even just because of the
user interface. With only the 10 standard modules the levels
of freedom patching this thing are amazing. And nearly every
combination works too. I find it to be a real intuitive UI, and this
paradox because this device *looks* to other people who are not
involved like the most complex thing on earth.

The sound is just so awesome. I was surprised that this thing does
much more than I'd expected, I thought you could only play the lead
on this, but it is also (or even in the first place) is ideal for
creating really cool rhythms (thru LFO, etc...) you can key off from.
So we're essentially using this thing as a drum machine now, and
playing bass and other synthesizers on top of it.

I'd love to spend more time finding out more about patches on
the web. I have only found: http://www.modular-planet.de so
far. Unfortunately the patches are not grouped by module set. So it is
hard to indentify patches that I can do with just the A-100 M
set. This would be a great use case for a XML-based web app:
I'd create a markup language, similar to HTML, for patches, say
PatchML, and we'd share patches thru PatchML web pages. I could
search those pages and sort them by category, e.g. check for
<modules-in-use>A100M</modules-in-use>. I might actually
do this if people think its worth the time...

I'll definitely get more modules later, but I feel like I have so
much to explore with those 10 modules that I'm happy to wait
until I feel I've fully taken advantage of all the possibilities with
just those modules... So it was definitely the right decision.

Keep in touch,

- Sebastian

Sebastian,

In case no one has warned you, or if you haven't figured it out by
now, be prepared for the following issues.

1. Sensory deprivation. This will generally manifest itself in the
form of sleeplessness, which will be a direct result of searching for
The Perfect Patch. Developing a taste for coffee is highly advised.

2. Deteriorated social skills. Your new best friend is now an
inanimate piece of electronics... at least this is what everyone
around you thinks. Forget personal relationships, as your new best
friend needs your attention. Now.

3. Financial ruin. Purchasing new modules will soon be more
important than eating or paying your rent/mortgage. It doesn't
matter how many modules you own because it simply won't be enough.
Sell your car today. You're going to need the money very soon (see
#4).

4. Dissatisfaction. You'll become painfully aware that your old
synthesizers are limited in their capacity to satisfy your routing
and modulation desires. There is only one way around this problem
(see #3).

Welcome to the world of obsession.

Regards,
Kevin

PatchML

2002-07-21 by Andreas Lindholm

Hi, I am a webbie too, but I don't think I fully see the point of your
patchML... But I like XMl anyway so I might lend a little hand. What
language did you plan on using in the backend? php, asp, java?

I'd like to add to the list.
* Constant hunt for a sound that stays in tune with the rest of your studio
caused by individuality of VCOs (a110).

Hi Sebastion

A while back, I started organizing information by module from this
group (click the Database link on the right), including patch
snippets, reviews and techniques. Unfortunately, the volume of
information has increased so much that I haven't been able to keep up.

Happily, it's just as easy to type some of the individual module
numbers into the "search" box on the top of the page. The A100 group
archives are an incredible treasure trove of patch ideas and
information.

I'd also recommend that you don't try to impose a digital paradigm on
an analog modular synth. Patch libraries, web-based or otherwise, were
an outgrowth of the DX7 phenomenon, where most people couldn't program
their own synthesizers any more.

If your experience is anything like mine, you'll learn more about
synth programming in the next few months with a modular system, than
you have in all your previous experience put together. Read some stuff
about general analog synth techniques, and develop your own patches!
It's much more fun and rewarding.

Joe

Hi Sebastian,

I think there are only a few sites with A-100-patches (what a pity!!).

A possibility is to add a line with required modules:

______________________
    Doepfer A-100

    Modules:
    A-121, A-131...
    Connections: / Settings:
    ...
    Notes:
    ...
______________________

or an additional site like this:

______________________
    Patch: | Modules:

    BassDrum | A-121, A-131...
    Claves | A-118, A-120...
    ...
______________________

But I dont know if this is a help for other group members?

Greetings

Josef
