curtis chip modules

2002-08-11 by jmaddocks1975

Hi list,
I have a slight concern, doepfer have 2 modules that use
discontinued chips. The a-111 hi-end VCO and the new A-109 signal
processor both use curtis chips no longer made. What if these chips
fail in a year or 2, we're gonna have serious difficulty getting
them repaired. I'm sure there's a reason for using these chips and
not new ones (mainly the sound) and I really like the curtis chip
filter and VCO (love the VCO) but slightly worried I might have a
dead module on my hands in a few years.
But, a lot of curtis synths are still alive and well so probably not
a problem really.
Are there any alternative chips that sound and act like a curtis
chip?
If not, can doepfer get some made or is it too expensive? (question
for Mr D)
Do these chips ever die or am I talking rubbish and worried about
nothing?
Just a thought!

For the A111 Doepfer always commented, that the 3340 might be a problem:
"The A-111 modules are sold while quantities last as the special circuit
CEM3340 used in the A-111 is no longer available! We sell the module even
without" (http://www.doepfer.de/a111.htm)

"The A-109 will be manufactured as a limited edition because the CEM3379 is
no longer in production, but we purchased a limited quantity of these
circuits." (http://www.doepfer.de/a109.htm)

I know, that Dieter together with some other manufactureres thought about
ordering a new series of the CEM 3340, but Dough Curtis said, he has to do
a series 10.000 pieces. This is too much for all participants.

I know that the CEM3340 sometimes dies (not very often), I never heard it
from the later filter series.
