Can't trigger A-140 from A-190-2

Can't trigger A-140 from A-190-2

2011-02-04 by Sidney

Hello everybody. I'm a totally newbie and just assembled my
A-100 mini system this week. It has a A-190-2, A-110, A-106-1, A-145, A-132-3 and A-140 assembled on a Tiptop Happy ending kit.

I tried to send a gate output from the A-190-2 midi interface to the A-140 ADSR gate input but nothing happened. I connected the A-145 LFO to the A-140 and then it's 'ADSR Contr.' light turned on. The 'ADSR Contr.' light also turned on when it received signal from the waveforms output from the VCO. Is there another way to trigger the A-140? Maybe the 190-2 gate output is faulty?

I followed the "Simple synthesizer standard patch with one envelope generator" diagram from page 11 of A-190-2 (since it is a very similar system as mine except for the different filter module) but could not get a sound from it.

I just removed the two jumpers from A-190-2 and the junper from A-140 but nothing changed.

Thank you,

Sidney H.

Hi Sydney, how are you adressing the Midi interface?

Hello Florian.

Yes, the Gate LED lights up when I send a midi message from the keyboard.

All the waveforms from the LFO trigger the gate of A140.

Hello York. I am connecting my midi keyboard with a standard midi cable to the midi input from A190-2 interface.

I also notice that the VCO doesn't make a tonal scale sound as I press notes from the keyboard. For example, if I press a C3 then a C4 on the keyboard I hear another interval instead of an octave. I kept the system turned on for more than 20 minutes as I read it needs some time to make it get in tune.

How do you connect the CV from the A190 with the VCO? It should be the
CV1-Input!
All this sounds like the D/A converter is trimmed completely wrong.
Did you buy the System new, or is it a used system?

Hi York. I think I had plugged the A190-2 the wrong way and might damaged the unit. It seemed to be working fine, receiving midi messages and activating the A110 both from the CV1 and pitch bend from CV2. But the gate output problem indicated there is something wrong really.

Thank you for the kind attention.

Re: Can't trigger A-140 from A-190-2

2011-02-04 by Sidney

Hi Florian. Yes I connected CV Note from A-190-2 to A110 CV1.

I think I had plugged the A190-2 the wrong way the first time I plugged it into the power bus board, and might damaged the unit. It seemed to be working fine, as it was receiving midi messages and activating the A110 both from the CV1 and pitch bend from CV2. But the gate output problem and out of tune scale indicated there is something wrong really. Maybe I will be necessary to buy a new one.

Thank you for the kind attention.

Sidney.

Hi Sidney,

Unfortunately I am not directly familiar with the A-190-2. In the manual
there is a diagram of the circuit board where a trim pot for the CV scale is
indicated. Trimming this might solve your tuning issue. As for the missing
gate I am at a loss tbh. It's quite possible that your unit is faulty. Did
you buy it from a dealer? I would contact the seller or Doepfer directly:

Hope you get your module fixed.

Re: Can't trigger A-140 from A-190-2

2011-02-05 by Sidney

Hi York.

The trimming problem seems to be getting solved. I am finding a little difficult to tune exactly since there are few trimming potentiometer to be adjusted. But seems I am getting closer to a conventional tonal scale as I compare to the piano sound from my digital worstation.

I tested the LFO sending a square wave to the A140 and noticed that it responded. The A190-2 seems that is maybe faulty because it's not sending the gate to any module. Maybe it's my fault.

ok, now tune the VCO extremely low and then insert the Gate-Out from the
A190-2 into the VCO CV1. Does the VCO jump quite high (at least five
octaves) if you press a key?

Hi Florian. I am adjusting the trim pots of the VCO, but altough I am still trying to get an exact tonal scale, it's getting closer to that.

Is there a trim adjust on the D/A converter from the A190-2 midi interface module?

Hi Florian.

I did what you told but I only got the same sound/note with no pitch variation when pressing any key from the keyboard.

Hello

ok, then the gate out does not provide a gate voltage. Does the LED
light up when you press a key (and go off if you release the key)?
If yes, then the gate out of the intereface is broken in fact.

Yes, the gate's LED lights up when I press a key and go off when the key is released, but doesn't activate the envelope generator.

I will try to find the transistor here in Brasil and see if that solves the gate output problem. If I won't find I will send to the dealer.

Thank you,

If the A-190-2 was plugged in the wrong way the gate output is fried. In
this case the collector of the npn gate output transistor is connected
to -12V which destroys the transistor. This explains why the gate output
does not work anymore. It is difficult to say if other sections of the
module are defective too. You may try to replace the transistor (Q1, BC547C)
to see if this is the only defective part. Or you send in the module for
repair to the dealer where you purchased the device.

Best wishes

Hi Sidney

To my experience the 2N3904 can be used as replacement for the BC547C.

The 2N3904 has to placed the other way around (flat side of the 2N3904
should point in the direction where the round side of the BC547C is
looking at).
See
http://www.datasheetcatalog.org/datasheet/SGSThomsonMicroelectronics/mXytvtz.pdf
http://www.datasheetcatalog.org/datasheet/SGSThomsonMicroelectronics/mXytvut.pdf

Pinout of the BC547C is Collector-Base-Emitter
Pinout of the 2N3904 is Emitter-Base-Collector

Mr. Doepfer. I successfully changed the A-190-2 Q1 resistor by replacing it with a BC547B transistor and the gate output is now working. But I think that the CV V/V output is not working. Is there any piece I can replace to fix this?

Thank you,

Sidney

Monroe,

As it has been stated, the double message is Yahoo's bug, a computer bug. So please, at least be polite next time you send me a message.

Re: [Doepfer_a100] double message to thge group

2011-02-17 by Monroe Eskew

I don't think it's a bug. If you are signed up to get the posts in your
email, then yahoo should send them right away. (If not now, when?) And
then if you go in and edit/delete your post on the yahoo site, then what is
the email program supposed to do? Email the revision is the only logical
choice. So the one to blame for double messages is the user who re-posts.
So please, users, when you say something, consider it said and move on.

Re: double message to thge group

2011-02-18 by Sidney

Monroe, you are right. Because I am using mainly the web to read and write messages, sometimes I post a message, and then post the same message with some modifications and delet the previous one on the Users Group page at Yahoo.

I noticed I sent the two similar messages on the digest I receive by email.

Sidney.
