Minicase

2011-02-13 by diceman14181

Hello, I have a Dark Energy and I would like to create a minicase with some modules to add effects to my ossillator. It is very difficoult to choose witch one to use. I think the noise module (A118) can be a good effect but then I don't know what to add to let it work properly. I saw in this group there are a lot of expert. I ask suggestions. Thank you

You have three types of potential modules
1.) Additional Audio sources.
2.) Additional modulation sources.
3.) Audioeffects which can be used after the DE.

#1 is simple: either a VCO, Noise, or an A-188-1 VC-Delay for
karplus-strong-stuff. The noise is to my opinion not a module which
would enhance the DE very much - with the exception if you are going to
make non tonal percussion sounds.

#2 If you are doing sequence based music: get an A-142-2 (hopefully soon
available).
If you are more experimental: theremin controller, joystick controller.

#3 Either one from the "distortion/waveshaper"-family A-116, A-136,
A-137-1. The A137 is for sure the most powerful, but eats up more rackspace.
Or a audioeffect, either the A-187-1 or a A188-1. The advantange of the
A188-1 is: you can use it either as effect for flanging, chorus or
short delays or as karplus strong oscillator.
The A-187-1 can make the small DE much bigger (soundwise). If you have
an analogue sequencer, then the A-187-1 will be gorgious.

Hi, can you tell us a bit what kind of music you'd like to make? Do you
address the DE with a keyboard or do you do sequencer-based music (Tangerine
Dream). Techno? Acid? Drones? Hardcore noise?

hello, my idea is to make improvvisation/drone/noise music using the loose DE without keyboard nor sequencer and the minicase should include some effect ...

thank you, I will chek the modules suggested in the third item.

For drones another oscillator and / or VC LFO will add complexity. A noise
module in combination with a (modulated) multi-mode filter is another idea
but you'd also need a mixer module (if you don't have an external one).

Florian's suggestions regarding the waveshapers are very good, too (as
always). If you want to keep it portable I'd skip the DSP and just add a
delay pedal or whatever suits your style.

wouldn't you want a filter in the signal chain after a waveshaper?
(at least a lo-pass)

(curious)

The wave shaper is a kind of opposite to a filter.
Synthesis with a VCF is based on subtracting partial waves from an
original signal which has a lot of partials.
Synthesis with a wave shaper is based on adding partial waves to an
original signal which has only a few or hasn't any partials.

The trick of the wave shaper (as with any exciter or distortion) is:
Send a dark signal into the wave shaper and control the amount of
shaping by controlling the characteristics of the input signal.

Example: It is completely boring to send the saw-tooth signal from the
VCO into the shaper:
VCO-Saw->Waveshaper->VCF
There will not be that much diffence to the original signal (at least
not that much, that it would be worth spending the money).

But sending in a sine or triangle after it has been the enveloped with
the VCA, can open up new sound worlds

VCO-Sine -> VCA -> Waveshaper
              ^
           AD-Envelope

And even much better:

VCO-Saw -> VCF -> VCA -> Waveshaper
             ^ ^
         slow AD-Envelope

where the VCF has high resonance. So the Shaper will shape two
frequencies: The frequency of the VCO and the cutoff frequency of the
resonating filter.

please specify the modules reference, it will be easier for me to identify and analize them. Thank you
