+5V gate to +12V trigger?

+5V gate to +12V trigger?

2011-09-16 by Zoe Blade

Hiya!

So I'm trying to rig up the +5V gate output of a Doepfer A-190-3 MIDI to CV converter module to the +5 to +12V trigger input of some Analogue Solutions modules, namely their BD88, SD88 and CP88. I suspect I'm just on the threshold as to whether I'm actually triggering them or not. Is there an easy way to convert +5V into a little bit more, preferably with the ability to send just a trigger pulse rather than a sustained gate?

Thanks!
Zoë.

pass the +5 volts trigger via the A183-3 Amplifier module to raise it to +12 volts and then pass it via the A162 Dual trigger delay module, to shape the gate into a (short-length) trigger.

that said, the Analogue Solutions Drum modules trigger fine with +5 volts gates too...

but the resulting sound may be better with +12 volts triggers, indeed....

Thank you very much! I'll get an A-183-3, that looks like exactly what I'm after. I can get *some* modules (the BD88 and CP88) to trigger at +5V, but not the SD88, which has the trigger LED light up but no sound actually come out of it, and judging by an old thread on Muff Wigglers ( http://www.muffwiggler.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=18258 ), it's just that Analogue Solutions snares need a bit more juice on the trigger for some reason.

Thanks again!
Zoe.

try sending a gate at the accent input also of the sd88 (at the same time that you send the gate to the trigger input).
then the SD88 might work with +5volts gates too.... or better add a cv offset of more than 5 volts to the accent input of the SD88...

The gate level of the A-190-3 can be changed to +12V internally. For this
the jumper on JP10A (behind the CV1 socket, labelled "GATE 5V JP10A") has to
be removed and installed to JP10B (behind the 16 pin bus connector, labelled
"GATE 12V JP10B").

The trigger is just a capacitor (nothing but the simple high pass on the
A-100 DIY page). Or you may use an A-162. But that's a bit "overstyled" for
this simple application.

Best wishes

Wow, thank you for such detailed advice! I've bought an A-183-3 on Bakis Sirros's advice, which seems simpler as I'll sometimes need +5V and sometimes +12V, and it'd be nice to not open up the module each time... But may I say this is the best tech support I've ever received! :)

Thanks,
Zoe.

Thank's a lot. That's what this forum is for ...

Update: the A-183-3 is *exactly* what I needed, thanks Bakis! If you want to integrate some Analogue Solutions Concussor modules into a Doepfer A-100, it's absolutely perfect. Just keep the switch at 2 (so the dial's range is 0 to +10V, doubling the +5V input) and the dial becomes a sort of accent control for all the Concussor modules. Of course, I can only use it to control one module at a time, but I'm becoming quite used to my modular synth being a monophonic, monotimbral instrument. :)

Thanks,
Zoe.
