A-164-1 Manual Gate... What's the 12V socket?

A-164-1 Manual Gate... What's the 12V socket?

2014-03-02 by richyho@virginmedia.com

Hi all

I have a quick question... what does the 12v socket at the top left corner of the A-164-1 Manual Gate module do? The instructions just say "Gate 1 is a bit different: provided that no plug is connected to the input socket it behaves like the other two manual gates (the socket is normalled to +12V via a protection resistor)." Does this just mean that it's a handy 12 volt source? If so, is it always on or is it supplied/interrupted by pressing the Gate 1 button?

Thanks

Please refer to the A-164-1 info page: ".... provided that no plug is
connected to the input socket it behaves like the other two manual gates
(the socket is normalled to +12V via a protection resistor). If a control
signal (e.g. rectangle output of an LFO) is fed into the input socket the
gate button 1 is working as a momentary on/off switch that is used to turn
the signal on/off that appears at the two output sockets (kind of mute
function)"

Best wishes

RE: AW: [Doepfer_a100] A-164-1 Manual Gate... What's the 12V socket?

Hi Dieter

I read (and quoted from) the info page, but I am still not sure what that socket does. I'm assuming that when you say "the socket is normalled to +12V" you are referring to the socket marked as "+12V"? Does it always supply 12V or is that supply interrupted when the button #1 is pressed? I am confused as the socket is not mentioned further and I'm not sure what its *use* is in the context of a manual gate switch.

In a (theoretical) patch that I am working on which uses and A-164-1 I need access to 12V and need to know whether I can use this socket to supply it or whether I need another module to supply it - for instance the A176 CV Source module.

Thanks

Richard

If a socket is normalled to a signal (e.g. +12V) it does not output the
normalled signal as it's an INPUT socket (i.e. the socket of the A-164 does
not output +12V !). Only the internal switching contact of the socket does
forward this internal signal as long as no plug is inserted into the socket.
The socket is not marked as +12V but has a small arrow labelled "+12V" that
directs to the socket. This means that this INPUT socket is internally
normalled to +12V as long as no plug is inserted.
