Behaviour of a Doepfer Mixer (A-138b)

Re: [Doepfer_a100] Behaviour of a Doepfer Mixer (A-138b)

Hello Karel,

I would say, try without the a138b and hear the result.

Best regards

As you can see in the video that's what I did. When I feed the saw wave directly to the SSG I get that nice high frequency moving sound. When I run the saw wave first through the mixer that's gone. The purpose is to mix several wave forms before they go to the SSG. But then as you can hear and see it then lacks the high frequencies.
I tried the A-130a, A-138m and A-135-1 too and they all react the same for that matter.

On my scope the wave forms looks the same before and after the mixer so what's the difference?

I will contact Random*Source too.

Hello Karel,

I assume the serge module is not buffered very well, so its input
creates an lowpass together with the output of the A-138.
I suggest the following test.

A-111 -> A-138 -> multiple

connect cubase with the multiple. Check the waveform and the frequency
range.

Then connect the SSG to the multiple too (cubase still connected to the
multiple). Check the waveform and the frequency range again. I assume
there will be a drop in the high frequency range. If yes, blame it to
the SSG.

regards
Florian

Hello Florian,

I'm not sure if I understand correctly.
I set up the patch as you suggested: A-111 -> A-138 -> multiple -> Cubase

What do I do next? Just put the output of the SSG to the multiple? I mean with or without any signal going into the SSG? I tried both but I can't see any difference on scope or on freq range.

best regards, Karel.

No, the next step is to connect the INPUT of the SSG to the multiple. I want to test, whether the input of the SSG pulls the output of the A-138 down.

It would look like this:

                          /------> SSG (no output)
A-111 -> A-138 -> multiple
                          \------> Cubase

Ok, then try to put some other module (which should be in a kind of
bypassmode) between the A-138 and the SSG. Like:

A-111 -> A-138 -> otherModule -> SSG -> Cubase

This "other Module" might be a highpass filter with the cutoff frequency
turned fully anticlockwise or a VCA with gain turned fully up.

I did some various patches and took screen captures of them. I don't seem to manage to attache the files so I put them in my dropbox: Doepfer

Hopefully the naming convention I used is clear. Otherwise please ask.

MAVCA = Manhattan Analog VCA.

Again I used the Saw Wave on the A111.

Some different results now I guess.

Best regards, Karel.

Hi Karel,

compare:
A111-A138(FullOpen)-SSG-Cubase
with
A111-MAVCA(FullOpen)-SSG-Cubase

You see, that in both cases the high frequency level drops.

So now it is clear:
The cause is NOT the A-138, because the same behaviour can be seen with
a non-Doepfer-module too.
The problem is caused by the SSG. I assume its input behaves with the
output circuit of the other modules like a lowpass. This is assumingly a
concept fault of the SSG circuit. I don't know the schematics of the
SSG, so I cannot tell details. But your tests proove it.

Florian

Hi Florian,

Thank you so much for clearing this out! Now I know what to do to achieve what I want. The good old method of mixing audio tracks afterwards :-).

I don't have schematics either. Random Source doesn't supply them with the kits. The only one that is available is from Ken Stone but it may be different from the one of Random Source.
