A-190-3 apparent failure

A-190-3 apparent failure

2018-01-07 by superdarktime@yahoo.com

Hi,

My A-190-3 MIDI module has apparently failed on the CV output. On my 'scope it shows -5v constant and there is no variation in the note pitch when connected to V/octave socket on any of my oscillators. I drive it from my MAQ 16/3 and I've checked the MIDI out on that with a Kenton Control Freak SE in its MIDI analyser mode and that is perfect.

The gate output of the A-190-3 is operating perfectly.

My question is, is there anything I can check before sending it back to Thomann as it is still under warranty?

Regards,

Michael.

Hi Michael, and the rest of the community.

This may be just a weird coincidence but I have noticed the exact same issue on my A-190-4 today and I was just about the ask the community the same question. I do not have a scope so I'm unable to verify the value being sent to the VCO from the A-190, but just like yours Michael, it is locked to one note no matter what CV signal is sent from my keyboard or DAW.

The gate signal is working correctly.

This is true whether I connect via the midi connector directly from my keyboard or via USB from my DAW.

This is also true if I send CV to the VCO via CV1 Output on the A-190 instead of via the system bus.

An external sequencer (korg sq-1) sending CV signal directly to the VCO works fine, so no issues with my VCOs.

Final point, when I power on my case with the USB connected to my DAW the interface on the A-190 is frozen and I cannot scroll through menus. If I power down my case, unplug the USB cable and power up again I can access the menus.

So I have the same question for the community - anything I can check before I also contact Thomann.

Cheers,
Colum

Hello Michael,

I'm sorry about the problems with the module.

Please check if the jumper that connects the CV out to the bus is removed
(to eliminate a problem caused by another CV transmitter on the same bus
board).
If that's fine I assume that the fault is caused by be a broken glide
potentiometer (or broken wire) and I ask you to return the module to Thomann
for repair.

Best wishes

Hello Colum,

please check the parameters Scale (SCA) and Tune (TUn). Typical values for
the coarse parameters are about 100 for SCA and 55 for TUn. If the values
differ clearly (e.g. 002 instead of 100) they have to be re-adjusted.
Concerning the USB freezing issue please contact Christian directly
(software@doepfer.de).

Best wishes

Re: [Doepfer_a100] A-190-3 apparent failure

2018-01-08 by Colum Brady

Hi Dieter,

Thank you very much for your assistance. The CV issue was indeed due the TUn value. The value was set at 255. I reduced to 55 and now I can hear the changes in CV signal, rather that what seemed like a constant high pitch tone prior to the change. I honestly don't know how the value changed as it is not a parameter that I would ever go into - indeed I rarely access the menu and the value has been place for over a year. Not to worry - it is working correctly now and I am little more knowledgeable regarding the module.

I have also recommendations from your colleague Christian to look at the issue where the menu is freezing and I'm optimistic that we will be able to resolve that issue also.

Thanks again for you help.

Colum

Hello Dieter,
Many thanks for that suggestion. I'll check it out.
